Two Calculations — One Person
The Human Design bodygraph is built from two separate calculations. The first is the moment of your birth (black color, Personality). The second is approximately 88 days before birth (red color, Design). These two layers together create the full picture of who you are.
This is one of Human Design's most unique concepts: you consist of what you're conscious of (black) and what you're unconscious of (red) — but what others see in you.
Black — Personality (Conscious)
Black activations in the bodygraph represent your Personality. This is what you know about yourself, how you see yourself, your conscious identity. If you have black Gates, you can feel their energy and say: "Yes, that's definitely me."
- Black Sun — your conscious life theme (70% of your conscious energy)
- Black Earth — your conscious grounding, stability
- Black planets — various aspects of your conscious nature
When someone describes you and it matches your black activations, you usually agree: "Yes, I know that about myself."
Red — Design (Unconscious)
Red activations are your Design, the unconscious part. This is what you don't know about yourself but what others see and feel. It's your body, genetic heritage, biological programming.
- Red Sun — your unconscious life theme (70% of your unconscious energy)
- Red Earth — your unconscious grounding
- Red planets — various aspects of your unconscious nature
When someone describes you and it matches your red activations, you might be surprised: "Really? I don't notice that."
Striped Channels and Gates
Sometimes Gates or Channels have both colors — red and black (striped). This means the energy is activated both consciously and unconsciously. These elements are especially powerful because you have both conscious and bodily access to them.
If a Channel is formed by one black and one red Gate — one side is known to you, while the other operates automatically at the body level.
Profile: Conscious and Unconscious Lines
Your Profile (for example, 4/6) also reflects this duality. The first number is the conscious line (from the black Sun), the second is unconscious (from the red Sun). You "live" the conscious line knowingly; the unconscious line is what others see in you.
Why This Matters
Understanding the conscious and unconscious helps you:
- Accept yourself fully — not just the part you know, but also the part others see
- Understand feedback — when people describe you "differently," they may be seeing your Design
- Build the complete picture — Personality + Design = the full map of your energy
Practical Exercise
Look at your bodygraph and find the red activations. Ask close friends or family whether they see these qualities in you. You may be surprised how accurately the unconscious shows up on the outside.
