What Is Definition?

Definition in Human Design describes how the defined centers are connected in your bodygraph. It shows whether your energy is whole or needs "bridging" through other people. Calculate your bodygraph to discover your definition.

Definition affects how you feel alone and in relationships, how quickly you make decisions, and how much you depend on your environment.

Single Definition

Approximately 41% of people have single definition. All defined centers are connected to each other without gaps.

Characteristics:

• Energetically self-sufficient — do not need others to "complete" themselves
• Make decisions faster (within their authority)
• Stable, consistent energy flow
• May seem less dependent on a partner

Split Definition

The most common type — approximately 46% of people. Defined centers form two separate groups not connected to each other.

Characteristics:

• Need "bridging" energy — through people, transits, or places
• Often feel drawn to people who "close" their gap
• Important to know your bridging gates
• Decisions may take more time as the two parts need to "communicate"

Triple Split Definition

Approximately 11% of people. Defined centers form three separate groups.

Characteristics:

Quadruple Split Definition

A very rare type — less than 1% of people. Defined centers form four separate groups.

Characteristics:

• Need the most diverse environment
• Very fixed, powerful energy in each separate group
• Decisions require significant time and many influences
• Rarely feel a complete "connection" — and that is normal

No Definition — Reflectors

1-2% of people are Reflectors with no defined centers at all. They are completely open and reflect their environment. Their lunar authority requires 28 days for important decisions.

How Does Definition Affect Relationships?

Understanding definition is key to healthy relationships:

• Single + Split: Single provides stability, Split receives bridging. A good combination if Single does not pressure for speed of decisions.
• Split + Split: Can bridge each other, creating a sense of wholeness. It is important that the bridging is mutual.
• Triple Split: Needs space for diverse contacts. A partner cannot be the sole source of bridging.
