What Is the Incarnation Cross?
The Incarnation Cross is the central theme of your life, your deepest purpose in Human Design. It consists of 4 gates formed by the positions of the Sun and Earth:
- Personality Sun — your conscious life force, who you think you are. This is the strongest activation (~26% of the neutrino stream).
- Personality Earth — your conscious grounding, what you rely on in life.
- Design Sun — your unconscious life force, calculated 88 days before birth. What others see in you.
- Design Earth — your unconscious grounding, the foundation of your bodily stability.
Together, these 4 gates form a "cross" that defines the theme of your existence. The neutrino stream — subatomic particles passing through us every second — carries information. The Sun and Earth account for approximately 70% of this stream, making the cross the most powerful element of the bodygraph.
192 Incarnation Crosses
In the Human Design system, there are 192 variations of Incarnation Crosses. They are formed from the 64 gates, grouped into crosses by three types of geometry. Each of the 64 Personality Sun gates gives the cross its name (for example, the Cross of the Sphinx is based on Gate 13), while the geometry type determines how that theme is lived out.
The name of the cross reflects its deep theme. For example, the Cross of Planning (gates 37-40 / 16-9) is connected to organizing community and resources, while the Cross of Explanation (gates 4-49 / 43-23) relates to logical comprehension and transformation of understanding.
Three Types of Crosses
Right Angle Cross — ~64% of people
Personal destiny. Your path is about your own transformation and self-discovery. You move through personal experience, not through influencing others. Right Angle Crosses are associated with profiles 1/3, 1/4, 2/4, 2/5, 3/5, 3/6 — profiles where the first line is less than or equal to the second. People with a Right Angle Cross come into the world to live their unique experience and complete their personal mission.
Left Angle Cross — ~33% of people
Transpersonal karma. Your path is intertwined with the fates of others. You meet the "right" people through your geometry. Left Angle Crosses are associated with profiles 5/1, 5/2, 6/2, 6/3 — where the first number is greater than the second. Your purpose is not just personal but collective: you influence others and change their lives through encounters and interaction.
Juxtaposition — ~3% of people
Fixed destiny. The only profile is 4/1. A very rare type — you are on rails, with a clear and unchanging direction. Juxtaposition Crosses exist between the personal and transpersonal, having their own unique, fixed path.
Profile and Cross
Your profile directly determines the geometry of the cross. A profile consists of two lines (for example, 3/5), and this combination indicates the cross type. The profile describes how you live out the cross theme: investigator (line 1), hermit (line 2), martyr (line 3), opportunist (line 4), heretic (line 5), or role model (line 6). The cross and profile form a unified system, where the cross provides the "what" theme and the profile provides the "how."
Famous Crosses
- Cross of the Sphinx (gates 13-7 / 1-2) — the theme of direction and self-identity. People with this cross carry wisdom about where humanity is heading.
- Cross of Consciousness (gates 64-63 / 35-36) — the theme of mental pressure and the search for meaning. A constant drive to understand and make sense of experience.
- Cross of Planning (gates 37-40 / 16-9) — the theme of community organization. This cross is connected to the Cross of Planning that governed humanity from 1615 through 2027.
- Cross of Service (gates 17-18 / 58-52) — the theme of improvement and logical analysis. People with this cross have the gift of seeing what can be made better.
When Does the Cross Become Relevant?
Ra Uru Hu said the cross "activates" after the Chiron Return (~50 years). Before that, living by your strategy and authority is more important. The cross is a consequence of living correctly, not a goal. When you live according to your type, strategy, and authority, the theme of the cross unfolds naturally and effortlessly.
