What is a channel in Human Design?

A channel is a connection between two of the nine centers in a Human Design bodygraph, created when both of the gates that form the link are defined in someone's birth chart. There are 36 channels in total, and each one carries a specific theme such as communication, identity, intuition, or emotional awareness. When a channel is defined, it is considered fixed and consistent, meaning the person has reliable access to that particular quality of energy throughout their life.

Channels are made up of two gates, one in each center, and together they describe how energy moves between those centers. For example, the Channel of Mutation links the Sacral Center to the Throat Center and is about the energy of transformation expressed through voice and creative work. Each channel belongs to one of the six design streams in the Incarnation Cross, giving further context to its purpose in a person's life.

Practically, understanding your defined channels shows you where your natural strengths and consistent gifts live. Undefined channels, on the other hand, indicate areas where you are more open and likely to amplify or take in other people's energy. Working with your channels means learning to trust the energy that is always available to you, while bringing awareness to places where you may be overly influenced by others.
