Decision-Making in Human Design: Strategy and Authority

Strategy and Authority are the two keys to correct decisions in Human Design. Learn how they work for each type.

If there's only one thing to know from Human Design, it's your Strategy and Authority. These two mechanisms determine how to make decisions and interact with the world.

Strategies of the Five Types

  • Generator — wait for sacral response. Don't initiate, but respond.
  • Manifesting Generator — wait for response, then inform before acting.
  • Projector — wait for invitation for major decisions.
  • Manifestor — inform before acting.
  • Reflector — wait a full lunar cycle (28 days).

Types of Authority

  • Emotional — wait for the emotional wave to pass
  • Splenic — trust the instant intuitive impulse
  • Sacral — listen to the sacral response
  • Ego — ask yourself "Do I want this?"
  • Self-Projected — speak aloud and listen to your voice
  • Outer — discuss with trusted people
  • Lunar — wait 28 days

Why the Mind Is Not Authority

In Human Design, the mind is never the authority for personal decisions. The mind is a wonderful tool for analysis, but not for your own decisions. Mind-based decisions lead to the Not-Self.

Strategy in the Body, Not the Calendar

Strategy shows up less in grand choices than in the small pull of an ordinary Tuesday. A Generator feels the sacral respond when a coworker asks, "Can you help me move these boxes?" in a wordless "uh-huh," or in the flatness of "not now." A Manifesting Generator notices the same hit but has the additional habit of an inner commentary that wants to alert the room before the body is already in motion. A Projector, asked in passing, "Want to run next month's client meeting?" hears the question as a probe rather than an invitation, and the strategy-for-invitation mechanism only kicks in when the offer is concrete and directed. A Manifestor, by contrast, has the opposite friction: spontaneous action is natural, and the work is to give people a heads-up so the room doesn't interpret a sudden decision as an attack. Reflectors move on a slower clock. A Reflector might spend a month reading a contract, not out of caution but because the body literally hasn't finished tasting the environment.

The misreading to watch for is treating strategy as a rule you perform. It isn't etiquette. It's a description of how your particular life force is shaped to interact with circumstance, and the situations where it shows up are usually unremarkable: answering a DM, accepting a meeting, walking toward one shop and away from another.

What It Feels Like From the Inside

When strategy and authority are operating, decisions tend to land quietly. A Splenic authority arrives as a single syllable of "yes" or "no" before the sentence is finished, almost too fast to catch. Emotional authority feels the opposite: a low-grade storm, often on a delay, where the same choice looks brilliant on Tuesday and terrible on Thursday, until the wave crests and the body's pull becomes obvious. Sacral authority, mainly for pure Generators, lives in the gut and sounds like a soft grunt, a hunger response, the body's own appetite. Self-Projected authority is stranger, sometimes uncomfortable, because it requires hearing yourself say the option out loud and noticing whether the voice becomes more certain or more hollow. Outer authority feels social: a Reflector or Self-Projected person feels their own clarity sharpen only after a particular conversation with a particular person, and walks away knowing. Lunar authority is patience as physiology — a Reflector watches the moon cycle as a way of waiting out the sampling process their aura does automatically.

The not-self mind, by contrast, has a different flavor: it sounds reasonable. It cites pros and cons, lists priorities, refers to past precedent. That very reasonableness is the tell. Decisions that come from analysis feel clean in the head and slightly numb in the chest.

Trying It Out Without Faking It

A workable starting practice is to lower the stakes on purpose. For one week, only run small choices through the relevant authority and see what happens. A Splenic person might notice which first impulse they usually override: the coffee order, the route home, the response to a casual invitation. A Generator practicing sacral authority could spend the week doing fewer things out of obligation and more in response to an actual bodily yes — even chores, even errands. An Emotional authority person can keep a simple log of the same choice across several days and notice when the wave settles into a coherent pull. A Self-Projected authority can practice the awkward step of literally voicing the option to a trusted listener, or recording themselves and playing it back. A Reflector can pick one low-pressure decision and let the lunar cycle have it, not as superstition but as a way of experiencing what a slow yes or no actually feels like. A Manifestor can take a week of spontaneous actions and add a brief inform — a message, a heads-up — and notice how the room's response shifts.

The point is not to perform a new personality. It's to catch the body's own signal underneath the mind's commentary, and to treat that signal as the actual authority in the room.
