Gate 42 in Human Design: The Gate of Growth

Gate 42 is the sacral energy of completing cycles. Learn how this force helps you finish what you start.

Gate 42: Growth — Increase

Gate 42 is located in the Sacral Center and corresponds to hexagram 42 of the I Ching — "Increase". This is the gate of completing cycles, which provides the energy to finish what has been started.

A person with Gate 42 understands the nature of cycles: every growth has a beginning, middle, and end. Their role is not to start but to complete what has been begun.

Channel 42-53: The Channel of Maturation

Gate 42 connects with Gate 53 (in the Root Center), forming Channel 42-53 — The Channel of Maturation. This is an individual channel that gives a person the experience of moving through complete cycles.

Practical advice

If you have Gate 42, follow your Strategy and Authority when entering new cycles. Before you start — make sure you are ready to finish. Your gift manifests when you complete what others have left unfinished.

What This Looks Like in the Middle of an Ordinary Day

It tends to show up not as a grand project but as a small, persistent pull. You notice the spreadsheet row someone abandoned three quarters done. You feel a faint friction when a meeting wraps up without anyone recording what was decided, or when a shared folder sits half-organized. None of it is dramatic, and that is the point. The Gate 42 pull is for the unsexy completion work: closing loops, sending the follow-up email, eating the last slice before it goes bad. A person with this gate defined will often be the one quietly doing those things while others have already moved on to the next idea. It can look like nagging from the outside, but from the inside it is more like an itch that resolves only when the thing is actually finished. Worth noticing is how the body responds. There is often a tangible lift — a relaxed belly, a deeper breath — when a cycle is closed, and a low background tension when one is left open. That tension is not anxiety about the future; it is a felt sense that something begun is still unfinished.

Common Misreadings and How to Tell Them Apart

Because "growth" sounds like expansion and forward motion, Gate 42 is often mistaken for a starting energy. It is not. The misreading shows up when someone with this gate keeps taking on brand-new projects because they mistake the appetite for completion as ambition. From the inside this can feel exciting for a week or two and then hollow, because the new thing has not yet built up enough unfinished momentum to feed them. Another frequent confusion is with perfectionism. Completing a cycle is not the same as perfecting it. Perfectionism avoids finishing because the result will never be flawless; Gate 42 wants to finish, and is willing to let the result be good-enough-and-done. A practical way to tell them apart: perfectionism tightens the chest and narrows options, whereas true completion work softens the body and frees up attention. A third misreading is burnout masquerading as growth. Pushing through every open loop "to grow" usually means Strategy and Authority have been skipped. The body, not the willpower, decides whether this particular cycle is yours to complete.

What to Try, and When

Rest before you begin, not after. People with this gate tend to do their cleanest completion work when their sacral response is rested rather than revved. Start small and finish the same day: one open conversation, one unresolved email, one shelf. Notice what your body does at the moment of closure — that sensation is your teacher for recognizing which cycles truly belong to you. And if you find yourself mid-project with no energy to close it, the honest move is to hand it back or let it rest, rather than to force a finish that the body is not on board with. Patience with the pace of the cycle is itself the practice.
