What Is the Incarnation Cross?
The Incarnation Cross is the foundation of your life purpose in Human Design. It consists of four gates: two from the Sun (Personality and Design) and two from the Earth (Personality and Design). These four gates form a "cross" that defines the theme of your life.
The Incarnation Cross accounts for approximately 70% of your nature. It is not what you do — it is how you live your life. It is your unique contribution to the collective mosaic of humanity. Check your cross in your bodygraph.
Three Cross Geometries
Each Incarnation Cross has one of three geometries that determines how your purpose manifests:
Right Angle — Personal Destiny
Approximately 64% of people have a Right Angle cross. Their purpose is personal. They are immersed in their own process of transformation. Right Angle means:
- Your life is your personal journey
- You meet people who are needed for your development
- Karma is personal — you work with your own lessons
- Focus on self-knowledge and personal transformation
Left Angle — Transpersonal Destiny
Approximately 33% of people have a Left Angle cross. Their purpose is transpersonal, meaning it is realized through others:
- Your life is connected to the fates of other people
- You meet people who need you
- Karma is transpersonal — you are connected to collective processes
- Purpose manifests through meetings, relationships, and interaction
Juxtaposition — Fixed Destiny
Fewer than 3% of people have a Juxtaposition cross. This is a unique geometry:
- A fixed life path — no "turns"
- A very specific mission that does not depend on circumstances
- Neither personal nor transpersonal — it is a "bridge" between the two
The Four Gates of the Cross
Understanding your cross begins with studying its four gates:
- Personality Sun — your conscious life theme, what you radiate. The strongest influence (~25% of your energy)
- Personality Earth — your grounding, the foundation of stability. The opposite gate to the Personality Sun
- Design Sun — the unconscious theme, what others see. Your genetic inheritance
- Design Earth — unconscious grounding, the foundation of the physical body
Each gate has a line (1-6) that adds detail to the theme. That is why there are hundreds of Incarnation Cross variations.
Saturn Return and Cross Activation
One of the most important aspects of the Incarnation Cross is that it fully activates at approximately age 30, during the so-called Saturn Return. Before this age, you are living through your "learning" period.
What this means:
- Before age 30 — you experiment, learn, and find yourself. The cross is not yet fully "switched on"
- Ages 28-30 — Saturn Return brings crisis and reevaluation. What is not yours falls away
- After 30 — the cross begins to manifest fully. You feel your purpose more clearly
- By age 50 — full unfolding of the cross theme through the Chiron Return
If you are under 30, do not worry. Your task now is to live by your strategy and authority, and the cross will manifest naturally. Learn more about the deconditioning process.
How to Work with Your Cross
The Incarnation Cross is not what you do. It is who you become when you live correctly. Here are practical steps:
- Study your 4 gates — read the description of each gate in your cross in the learning section
- Pay attention to the lines — line 1 gives an investigative approach, line 6 a role model
- Observe the theme — how do these four gates manifest in your daily life?
- Do not try to "live" your cross — it manifests on its own when you follow strategy and authority
- Compare with famous people — check celebrities with the same cross
Remember: the Incarnation Cross is the result of living correctly, not a task to be completed. Live by your design, and your purpose will unfold.
