Strategy — Your Correct Way to Act
Strategy in Human Design is the mechanically correct way of interacting with the world for your type. It is not a philosophy or a belief — it is an experiment you verify in practice. When you live according to your strategy, your signature appears — a sign of correct living. When you do not, the not-self theme activates.
Calculate your bodygraph to discover your type and strategy.
What Is the Not-Self?
The Not-Self is the state of living someone else's life. It is the result of conditioning — the influence of family, society, education, and environment. The undefined centers in your bodygraph are the zones through which conditioning enters.
The not-self theme is an alarm signal. When you feel it constantly, it means you are making decisions outside your strategy.
Strategy for Each Type
Generator: Wait to Respond
Signature: Satisfaction | Not-Self: Frustration
A Generator should not initiate. Instead, they wait until something in the outside world "hooks" their Sacral center — and then respond. The response is a bodily "uh-huh" or "uh-uh."
Experiment: For one week, do not start anything on your own. Wait for proposals, questions, situations. Listen to your sacral response before saying "yes."
Manifesting Generator: Respond → Inform → Act
Signature: Satisfaction | Not-Self: Frustration and Anger
The MG combines the Generator's response with the Manifestor's need to inform. First — wait for the response, then tell those around you about your intentions, and only then act.
Experiment: Notice when you "jump" into action without a response. Pause. Wait for the impulse and inform those close to you before moving forward.
Projector: Wait for the Invitation
Signature: Success | Not-Self: Bitterness
A Projector needs recognition and invitation for major life decisions — work, relationships, place of residence. Without an invitation, their wisdom will not be received.
Experiment: Stop offering unsolicited advice. Wait to be asked. Notice how people's reactions change when they request your help themselves. Explore the experiment section.
Manifestor: Inform Before Acting
Signature: Peace | Not-Self: Anger
A Manifestor has powerful initiating energy, but their closed aura creates resistance. The informing strategy is not "asking permission" — it is notifying those affected before acting.
Experiment: Before every action that affects others, inform them. Notice how resistance disappears and peace appears.
Reflector: Wait a Lunar Cycle
Signature: Surprise | Not-Self: Disappointment
A Reflector needs a full lunar cycle (28 days) for important decisions. Each day their bodygraph "comes alive" differently as the Moon transits through the gates.
Experiment: Keep a journal for a month. Record how your feelings about an important decision change day by day.
Conditioning and Deconditioning
Conditioning is the process by which undefined centers "memorize" others' energy and begin to consider it their own. From childhood we absorb the expectations of parents, teachers, and society.
Deconditioning is the gradual process of returning to your true nature. It takes approximately 7 years (the cell renewal cycle). Learn more in the deconditioning section.
How to Begin?
The simplest step is to start observing your not-self theme. When you feel frustration, bitterness, anger, or disappointment — it is a signal that you acted outside your strategy. Do not blame yourself. Simply notice and try differently next time.
