What Is a Composite Chart?
A composite in Human Design is the overlay of two bodygraphs onto each other. When two people come together, their defined channels and centers interact, creating a new, unique energetic configuration — a relationship map.
Unlike basic zodiac compatibility, a composite shows the specific mechanics of interaction: where you strengthen each other, where friction arises, and how to make decisions together. Calculate your composite for free on our site.
Types of Connections in a Composite
Electromagnetic Channels
The most powerful type of connection. It occurs when one partner has one gate of a channel and the other partner has the opposite gate. For example, one has gate 1, the other has gate 8, and together they form channel 1-8.
An electromagnetic channel creates magnetic attraction between partners. This is what we often call "chemistry." The channel only works when you're together — separate, and it disappears.
Compromise Channels
These arise when both partners have the same complete channel. This is a zone of competition — both carry their own fixed energy, and neither will yield. In healthy relationships, this becomes a zone of mutual respect; in unhealthy ones, a battlefield.
Dominance Channels
One partner has a complete channel, the other doesn't. In this zone, one person sets the energetic tone, and the other amplifies and feels it. Don't confuse this with control: it's simply one person's fixed energy that the other experiences.
Companionship Channels
Both have the same hanging gates — an incomplete channel from both sides. This is a zone of shared seeking and potential vulnerability, where a third person can "complete" the channel.
How Centers Work in Relationships
When you have an undefined center and your partner has it defined, you feel and amplify their energy in that area:
- Emotional center: one partner creates emotional waves, the other feels them doubly
- Sacral center: a Generator "charges" a Projector or Reflector
- Ego center: questions of willpower, promises, and self-worth in the couple
- Ajna and Head: mental pressure — one thinks, the other amplifies
Compatibility Score
On the composite page, you'll see an overall compatibility score that accounts for:
- Number of electromagnetic channels (highest weight)
- Partnership connections
- Number of compromise zones
- Dominance channels
But remember: a high score doesn't guarantee a happy relationship, and a low one doesn't mean incompatibility. This is a tool for awareness, not a verdict.
Practical Application
- Calculate the composite with your partner
- Pay attention to electromagnetic channels — that's your "chemistry"
- Discuss compromise zones — where are you both inflexible?
- Notice dominance — who "sets the tone" in which area?
- Use the knowledge for understanding, not blame
