What Are Circuits in Human Design
Circuits are energy streams in the bodygraph that connect centers through channels and gates. Each circuit has its own theme, its own way of processing information and interacting with the world. Human Design has three main circuit groups: Tribal, Collective, and Individual.
Understanding circuits helps you see which energy dominates your design: whether you are oriented toward family and material security, sharing knowledge and experience, or unique self-expression.
Tribal Circuit: The Power of Clan and Material
The Tribal Circuit is the energy of support, loyalty, and material provision. Key characteristics:
- Theme — support. "I will take care of mine, and they will take care of me."
- Mechanism — touch. Tribal energy is transmitted through physical contact: hugs, handshakes, shared meals.
- Focus — family, business, material well-being, reproduction.
- Channels — 19-49 (Sensitivity), 37-40 (Community), 21-45 (Money), 26-44 (Transmission), 32-54 (Transformation), 59-6 (Intimacy).
A person with a strong Tribal Circuit values family bonds, stability, and mutual commitments. It is important that loved ones are provided for and protected.
Collective Circuit: Sharing and Growth
The Collective Circuit divides into two sub-circuits: Understanding (Logical) and Sensing (Abstract).
Logical Sub-Circuit (Understanding)
- Theme — patterns and prediction. "If it worked before, it will work again."
- Mechanism — sharing information. Logical energy wants to share a formula that works for everyone.
- Focus — science, systems, standards, correction, proof.
Abstract Sub-Circuit (Sensing)
- Theme — experience and cycles. "I need to live through this to understand it."
- Mechanism — sharing experience. Abstract energy tells stories and shares what has been lived through.
- Focus — art, history, emotions, desire, cycles.
Both sub-circuits share the fact that their energy is for everyone, not just the select few.
Individual Circuit: Mutation and Uniqueness
The Individual Circuit is the energy of mutation, uniqueness, and self-expression:
- Theme — empowerment. "I am here to be myself and inspire others to be themselves."
- Mechanism — melancholy and mood. Individual energy comes in waves: creative highs followed by lows.
- Focus — creativity, innovation, mutation, paradigm-shifting knowledge.
- Channels — 1-8 (Inspiration), 2-14 (The Beat), 3-60 (Mutation), 12-22 (Openness), 28-38 (Struggle), 39-55 (Emoting) and others.
Individuals often feel "different." Their ideas are ahead of their time, their style does not fit the mold. This is not a defect — it is their role: to bring the new into the world.
How to Determine Your Dominant Circuit
Calculate your bodygraph and look at your defined channels. If most channels belong to one circuit — that energy dominates your life. A mix of circuits is also normal; it makes you a multifaceted personality.
