What is Human Design?

Human Design is a self-knowledge system that combines elements of astrology, I Ching, Kabbalah, the Hindu chakra system, and quantum physics. Founder Ra Uru Hu received this knowledge in 1987. The system helps you understand your unique energetic mechanics — how to make decisions, interact with others, and live according to your true self.

How do I calculate my Human Design chart?

For a calculation, you need your exact date, time, and place of birth. On HD Matrix, you can enter this data on the homepage and instantly get your chart (bodygraph) with a full analysis of your type, strategy, authority, profile, defined centers, gates, and channels. Birth time accuracy is important — even 15 minutes can change the result.

A bodygraph is a visual map of your energy system. It consists of 9 centers (triangles and squares), 64 gates (numbers), and 36 channels (lines between centers). Defined (colored) centers are your consistent energy, open (white) ones are where you amplify others' energy. The bodygraph shows how you process information, make decisions, and interact with the world.

What is a Type in Human Design?

Type is the fundamental characteristic of your Design. There are 5 types: Generator (~37%), Manifesting Generator (~33%), Projector (~21%), Manifestor (~8%), and Reflector (~1%). Each type has its own strategy for interacting with the world, signature (sign of correct living), and Not-Self theme (signal of a false path).

What is Strategy and why do I need it?

Strategy is the correct way of interacting with the world for your type. Generator — Wait to Respond, Manifesting Generator — Respond + Inform, Projector — Wait for Invitation, Manifestor — Inform, Reflector — Wait a Lunar Cycle. When you follow your strategy, resistance decreases and your signature appears — satisfaction, success, peace, or surprise.

What is Inner Authority?

Inner Authority is your decision-making mechanism. It's NOT the mind — it's the body. There are 7 types: Emotional (wait for clarity after the wave), Sacral (listen for 'uh-huh/nuh-uh'), Splenic (instant intuition), Ego (what do I want?), Self-Projected (hear yourself through speaking), Mental (discuss with others), and Lunar (wait 28 days).

What's the difference between a Generator and Manifesting Generator?

Both have a defined Sacral center and Respond strategy. The difference: Manifesting Generator (MG) has a motor channel to the Throat, giving manifestation ability. MGs are faster, multi-tasking, non-linear (jumping between tasks). Pure Generators are more sequential, 'builders', achieving mastery through deep focus on one topic.

Why do Projectors get tired quickly?

Projectors don't have a defined Sacral center — they lack a stable source of working energy. They amplify the sacral energy of others (Generators), so they may feel energetic in company but then 'crash'. Projectors need more rest, shorter workdays, and alone time for recovery.

Why do Manifestors feel anger?

Anger is the Manifestor's Not-Self theme. It arises when the Manifestor meets resistance from others. The reason is often that the Manifestor doesn't inform before acting — others don't understand what's happening and resist. When the Manifestor follows the Inform strategy, resistance decreases, and Peace (the signature of correct living) replaces anger.

Why are Reflectors so rare (1%)?

Reflectors are the only type with no defined centers at all. All 9 centers are open, making them extremely sensitive to their environment. They mirror community health — like a 'canary in a mine'. Their rarity makes them valuable indicators of collective well-being. Reflectors need 28 days (lunar cycle) for major decisions.

What are centers and what does defined/open mean?

9 bodygraph centers are energy hubs with specific functions: Head (inspiration), Ajna (mind), Throat (manifestation), G (identity), Heart (willpower), Sacral (life energy), Spleen (intuition), Solar Plexus (emotions), Root (pressure). Defined (colored) = stable, consistent energy. Open (white) = you amplify this energy from others, but it's inconsistent.

What are gates and channels?

64 gates correspond to the 64 hexagrams of I Ching. Each gate is a potential for a specific quality. When gates from two adjacent centers are both active, they form a channel — a stable energy flow that defines both centers. There are 36 channels total. Channels are your 'talents' and consistent modes of self-expression. Activated gates without a partner create 'hanging' gates — potential seeking completion from others.

What is a Profile and how to read it?

Profile consists of two numbers (e.g., 3/5) — the conscious (Personality) and unconscious (Design) lines. 6 lines: 1 — Investigator, 2 — Hermit, 3 — Martyr (Experimenter), 4 — Opportunist, 5 — Heretic, 6 — Role Model. First number = the role you're aware of, second = what others see. Profile determines your learning style and life path.

Not-Self is a state when you live out of alignment with your Design. Each type has a Not-Self theme: Generator — Frustration, MG — Frustration + Anger, Projector — Bitterness, Manifestor — Anger, Reflector — Disappointment. These emotions signal that you're not following your Strategy and Authority. Open centers also have Not-Self questions that help recognize conditioning.

What is Definition — Single, Split, Triple?

Definition shows how your defined centers are connected: Single — all defined centers connected by channels (inner wholeness). Split — two separate groups of defined centers (need another person to 'bridge'). Triple Split — three separate groups. Wide Split = big gap, narrow = small. No Definition = Reflector.

How to start learning Human Design?

1. Calculate your bodygraph on HD Matrix. 2. Learn your Type and Strategy — this is the most important. 3. Identify your Authority — how to make decisions. 4. Start the 7-year experiment: follow your Strategy and Authority daily. 5. Observe Not-Self themes in your open centers. Don't try to learn everything at once — type, strategy, and authority are 90% of the practical benefit.

What is the 7-year experiment?

7 years is the time for all your body's cells to fully renew. Ra Uru Hu said it takes 7 years of consistently following Strategy and Authority to fully deconstruct the Not-Self and begin living as your true Design. It's not a 'quick fix' — it's a gradual transformation where you observe how your life changes.

What is deconditioning?

Deconditioning is the process of releasing false beliefs and patterns acquired through open centers. Since childhood, you absorbed others' energy and made decisions from the mind, not your authority. Deconditioning happens automatically when you follow Strategy and Authority. Signs: less stress, better decisions, more energy, clarity in relationships.

How is Human Design different from astrology?

Astrology works with planet positions in 12 zodiac signs and gives general characteristics. Human Design uses the same planet positions but projects them onto 64 I Ching hexagrams and a specific centers/channels system. The main difference: HD gives a PRACTICAL decision-making strategy (Type + Authority), not just a description. HD also uses TWO moments: birth (Personality) and 88 days before birth (Design).

How to use Human Design for parenting?

The key is knowing your child's Type. Generator children need yes/no questions, Projectors need invitations and recognition, Manifestors need freedom with informing, Reflectors need stable environments. Don't impose your strategy on the child — if you're a Manifestor and the child is a Generator, give them time to respond. Knowing the child's open centers helps understand where they're most vulnerable to conditioning.

How accurate does the birth time need to be?

Ideally — to the minute. The Moon changes gates every ~2 hours, the Sun — every ~5-6 days. A 15-30 minute difference can change Moon gates, planet lines, and sometimes even the Profile. If you don't know the exact time, try rectification — a method of refining birth time through life events. HD Matrix has a dedicated rectification tool.

What is a Composite chart?

A Composite is an overlay of two bodygraphs for relationship analysis. It shows 4 connection types: Electromagnetic (attraction), Dominance (one partner leads), Compromise (both have different), Partnership (both amplify the same). Composites help understand couple dynamics and what to focus on in relationships.

Transits are current planet positions that temporarily activate gates and channels in your bodygraph. If a transit planet hits a gate that pairs with your natal gate, a temporary channel forms — you feel new energy. The Sun is the strongest transit (changes gates every ~5-6 days). Transits show 'cosmic weather' and help understand your current state.

What is Variable (PHS, Environment, Motivation, Perspective)?

Variable is an advanced level of Human Design defining 4 aspects: PHS (Primary Health System) — how to eat correctly, Environment — where to live/work, Motivation — what drives you, Perspective — how you see the world. Each aspect has 6 variants (Colors), 6 Tones, and 5 Bases. Variable is accessible after basic understanding of type and authority.

What is the Incarnation Cross?

The Incarnation Cross is your 'purpose' or life theme. It consists of 4 gates: Sun and Earth of Personality (conscious) + Sun and Earth of Design (unconscious). There are 192 crosses divided into 3 types: Right Angle (personal path), Left Angle (impact on others), and Juxtaposition (fixed path). The Cross unfolds only when you live by Strategy and Authority.

What is Dream Rave (Sleep Design)?

Dream Rave is your sleep bodygraph. During sleep, the Magnetic Monopole 'releases' the Design Crystal, and the body experiences a different programming filter. Dream Rave has 5 centers (instead of 9), 15 gates, and its own channels. It shows how neutrinos affect you during sleep, helping understand dream themes and nighttime restoration.

What is the 2027 transition?

Ra Uru Hu predicted that in 2027, the global programming background would shift: the Cross of Planning (gates 37, 40, 9, 16) — collective support — would change to the Cross of the Sleeping Phoenix (gates 55, 59, 34, 20) — individual mutation. This means weakening collective structures (government, corporations, family) and rising individual consciousness. Preparation: know your Design and live by Strategy.

What are Gene Keys and how do they relate to HD?

Gene Keys is Richard Rudd's system based on the same 64 hexagrams as HD. Each Gene Key has 3 levels: Shadow (low frequency), Gift (mid), and Siddhi (highest). Gene Keys focuses on consciousness transformation through contemplation, while HD focuses on mechanics and practical strategy. They complement each other: HD shows 'how', Gene Keys shows 'why' and 'where to'.

Penta is the aura of a 3-5 person group with its own mechanics. BG5 is the business application of HD for teams. When 3+ people gather, their bodygraphs create group dynamics with 3 main functions: Management (channels to Throat), Sales (channels to Sacral), and Support. Penta shows who plays which role in the team and where gaps exist.

What is Rave Cosmology?

Rave Cosmology is the deepest level of HD knowledge, describing the origin of consciousness. Key concepts: Consciousness Crystals (Design and Personality), Magnetic Monopole, Neutrinos (information-carrying particles), Binary Consciousness (dual human nature), and Passenger Consciousness. These concepts explain WHY HD works at the quantum level.

Can Human Design change over time?

No, your bodygraph is fixed at birth and doesn't change throughout life. However, your understanding and living of your Design does change. Also, transits (current planet positions) temporarily activate different gates and channels. The 6th line Profile has 3 life phases (before 30, 30-50, after 50), but the bodygraph itself remains unchanged.

Is Human Design scientific?

HD is not a scientific system in the traditional sense — it hasn't undergone peer-reviewed research. However, it's based on real astronomical data (planet positions), and some elements (neutrinos, genetic code) have scientific grounding. Ra Uru Hu always said: 'Don't believe me — run your own experiment.' HD is a practical self-knowledge tool verified through personal experience.

How to use HD in relationships?

1. Create a Composite (compatibility chart) — learn connection types. 2. Understand your partner's strategy — Generators need response, Projectors need invitations. 3. Look at each other's open centers — that's where most misunderstandings occur. 4. Don't try to change your partner to match your Design. 5. Use compatibility scoring to understand the couple's strengths and weaknesses.

How does Human Design help with career?

HD shows your natural strengths through defined centers and channels. Generators are builders and masters, Projectors are managers and consultants, Manifestors are initiators and entrepreneurs, Reflectors are evaluators and auditors. BG5 (business HD) helps find the right team role. Key: follow Strategy in career decisions — wait for the right opportunities rather than initiating from the mind.

Why are open centers wisdom, not weakness?

Open centers are places where you absorb and AMPLIFY others' energy. This gives you a unique ability: deeply sensing this aspect in different people. For example, open Sacral understands who truly has energy and who doesn't. Open Ajna sees multiple viewpoints. Open center wisdom comes over time through deconditioning — when you stop identifying with others' energy.

What is the Emotional Wave and how to work with it?

If your Solar Plexus (Emotional center) is defined, you have an emotional wave — a cyclical movement from euphoria to melancholy and back. This is NOT a disorder — it's your natural mechanics. Rule: 'There is no truth in the moment.' Never make decisions at the peak (of joy or sadness). Wait until the wave passes 2-3 cycles — clarity comes gradually, like a picture developing.
