What Are Gates?
The 64 gates in Human Design correspond to the 64 hexagrams of the I Ching — the ancient Chinese Book of Changes. Each gate carries its own unique theme, energetic frequency, and 6 lines that describe different shades and nuances of that theme. For example, Gate 1 is about Creativity and self-expression, while Gate 2 is about Direction and receptivity.
Gates are located in the 9 centers of the bodygraph. When a planet at the time of birth activates a gate, it becomes defined (colored) in your chart. Activation happens in two ways:
- Personality Gates (black) — activated by planets at the moment of birth. This is what you are conscious of about yourself, your aware qualities and talents.
- Design Gates (red) — activated by planets approximately 88 days before birth. This is your unconscious, bodily nature — what others see in you, but you may not be aware of yourself.
Each of the 13 planets (Sun, Earth, Moon, Nodes, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto) activates specific gates from both sides, creating 26 activations in your bodygraph.
What Are Channels?
A channel forms when two opposite gates (on different ends of the same channel) are both defined. A channel connects two centers and defines them both. There are 36 channels in the bodygraph, and each one carries its own unique theme.
A channel is a constant energy flow between two centers. It is your reliable gift that is always with you, regardless of your environment. Channels are what create Definition in your bodygraph:
- Single Definition — all defined centers are connected to each other. The most self-sufficient type.
- Split Definition — two separate groups of defined centers. Requires time for an internal "dialogue" between the parts.
- Triple Split Definition — three separate groups. Requires movement and changing environments for integration.
- Quadruple Split Definition — four separate groups. The rarest type, requiring significant time for decision-making.
Key Channel Examples
Among the 36 channels, several are particularly well-known:
- Channel 34-20 (Charisma) — connects the Sacral Center to the Throat. Gives the ability to instantly transform sacral energy into action and words. One of the most powerful channels of the Manifesting Generator.
- Channel 12-22 (Openness) — connects the Throat Center to the Solar Plexus. A channel of social emotionality that gives the talent to express feelings through art, music, and words.
- Channel 1-8 (Inspiration) — connects the G Center to the Throat. The channel of the creative role model who inspires others by example, not by words.
- Channel 57-20 (Penetrating Awareness) — connects the Splenic Center to the Throat. Gives intuitive clarity in the moment and the ability to express deep truths spontaneously.
Hanging Gates
If only one gate of a pair is defined — it is a "hanging gate." They create a sense of incompleteness and a natural attraction to people who have the opposite gate. This is the basis of electromagnetic connection in compatibility.
Hanging gates are also points of conditioning — through them, other people and planetary transits influence you. When someone nearby "completes" your channel, you feel a powerful energy that is not actually yours. Understanding your hanging gates helps you realize why you are attracted to certain people and why you feel different in different environments.
Three Circuits and Their Sub-Circuits
All 36 channels are organized into three major circuits, each with its own sub-circuits:
- Individual Circuit — mutation, uniqueness, creativity. "I must be myself"
- Knowing Circuit — intuitive knowledge without logical explanation
- Centering Circuit — self-identity and direction
- Tribal Circuit — family, resources, support. "We take care of each other"
- Defense Circuit — survival and protection of the tribe
- Ego Circuit — material resources, promises, business
- Collective Circuit — knowledge for all. "We share experience"
- Understanding Circuit (Logic) — logical patterns, formulas, forecasting
- Sensing Circuit (Abstract) — experience, emotions, memories, cyclicality
Separately, there is the Integration Circuit — 4 channels connecting the G Center to the Throat, Sacral, and Splenic centers. This is the most ancient circuit of individual survival.
