What Is PHS?
PHS (Primary Health System) is the branch of Human Design that describes how your body optimally processes food. This is not a diet in the conventional sense — it is a way of eating determined by your genetics. PHS is based on the color and tone of the Design Sun nodes in your bodygraph.
The idea is simple: your body is a biological machine with unique settings. When you eat in the way that is correct for you, your body absorbs nutrients better, your brain works more efficiently, and you feel more energy. Check your Variable in your bodygraph.
6 Determination Types
Each person has one of six determination types that describes ideal conditions for eating:
1. Appetite
Eat when you are hungry, not on a schedule. Your body knows exactly when and how much it needs:
- Listen to real hunger, not habit
- Do not eat for company or "because it is lunchtime"
- Appetite may change daily — this is normal
2. Taste
For you, the taste of food matters. Food should taste good specifically to you:
- Cook what you enjoy the taste of
- Do not force yourself to eat "healthy" food if you dislike the taste
- Variety of tastes is your key
3. Thirst
Water and liquids play a key role in your digestion:
- Drink water before, during, or after meals (experiment)
- Soups, smoothies, and juicy dishes are your friends
- Dry food may be poorly absorbed
4. Touch
For you, the texture of food and tactile sensations matter:
- Eat in a comfortable, cozy environment
- Food texture matters more than calories
- Eat with your hands if it helps you feel the food
5. Sound
The sound environment during meals affects absorption:
- Experiment with sound backgrounds during meals
- Avoid stressful conversations at the table
- Notice how different sounds affect your appetite
6. Light
Lighting during meals is critically important:
- Notice under which lighting food is better absorbed
- Natural daylight is often optimal
- Eating under artificial versus natural light is a major experiment
6 Environment Types
Beyond nutrition, PHS determines your ideal living space:
- Caves — enclosed, cozy spaces. You need walls, a roof, a sense of security
- Markets — lively, active places with people and movement. Cafes, shopping centers, streets
- Kitchens — spaces of transformation. Not literally a kitchen — places of change and processes
- Mountains — elevated positions with a view. Upper floors, hills, places with perspective
- Valleys — lowlands, cozy places in nature. Parks, forests, river valleys
- Shores — transitional zones between environments. Seashore, city edges, border territories
Sleep According to Your Design
PHS also addresses sleep. Core principles:
- Generators and MGs — go to bed when you feel physical Sacral exhaustion. You need complete tiredness
- Projectors, Manifestors, Reflectors — go to bed before full exhaustion. Lie in bed and relax even if you do not fall asleep immediately
- Sleep alone — ideally, everyone should sleep in their own aura. This is especially important for non-Sacral types
- Darkness — complete darkness promotes melatonin production
How to Start the PHS Experiment
PHS is an experiment, not strict rules. Here is where to start:
- Find your determination type and environment in your bodygraph (Variable section)
- For one month, observe how different conditions affect your well-being
- Keep a journal: what you ate, where, under what lighting/sound — how you felt afterward
- Do not change everything at once — start with one aspect
- Trust your strategy and authority — they will help you understand what is correct
PHS is a deep level of Human Design. Learn more about your body's mechanics in the learning section and study your open centers for the complete picture.
