Gates and the I Ching

Each of the 64 gates in Human Design corresponds to one of the 64 hexagrams of the I Ching — the ancient Chinese Book of Changes. Ra Uru Hu, the founder of Human Design, received a system that united the ancient wisdom of the I Ching with modern knowledge of genetics, astronomy, and quantum physics.

Gates are located in the 9 centers of the bodygraph. Each gate carries a unique theme — a particular quality of energy that you radiate. Activated gates (red for unconscious, black for conscious) show your consistent characteristics. Check your gates in your bodygraph.

Gates by Center

Here is how the 64 gates are distributed among the nine centers:

Head — The Pressure of Inspiration

Three gates: 64 (Before Completion), 61 (Inner Truth), 63 (After Completion). These gates create mental pressure — questions, inspiration, and doubt. They initiate the mental process.

Ajna — Conceptualization

Seven gates: 47, 24, 4, 17, 43, 11. The Ajna processes information from the Head. Thoughts, concepts, and mental models are formed here. These gates determine how you think.

Throat — Manifestation

Eleven gates: 62, 23, 56, 35, 12, 45, 33, 8, 31, 20, 16. The Throat is the center of expression and action. Everything in the bodygraph seeks expression through the Throat.

G-Center (Self) — Identity

Eight gates: 1, 13, 25, 46, 2, 15, 10, 7. The G-Center is your identity, direction in life, and capacity to love. These gates determine who you feel yourself to be.

Heart/Ego — Willpower

Four gates: 26, 51, 21, 40. The center of willpower, ego, and the material world. Connected to promises, competition, and self-worth.

Sacral — Life Force

Nine gates: 5, 14, 29, 59, 9, 3, 42, 27, 34. The Sacral is a powerful motor for life force and sexual energy. These gates determine what you have energy to respond to.

Solar Plexus — Emotions

Seven gates: 36, 22, 37, 6, 49, 55, 30. The center of the emotional wave. These gates create different types of emotional waves — from desire to melancholy.

Spleen — Intuition

Seven gates: 48, 57, 44, 50, 32, 28, 18. The center of survival, health, and intuition. These gates provide instant intuitive impulses — a "yes" or "no" in the moment.

Root — Adrenaline Pressure

Nine gates: 53, 60, 52, 19, 39, 41, 58, 38, 54. The Root is a motor of stress and adrenaline. These gates create pressure to act, move, and transform.

Hanging Gates — Zones of Attraction

When you have an activated gate but the opposite gate of the channel is not activated, this is a hanging gate. It creates a zone of attraction: you unconsciously seek people with the corresponding gate to complete the channel.

• Hanging gates are not a problem. They are part of your design
• When you meet someone with the needed gate, you feel an attraction
• This explains why certain people seem magnetic to you — they "complete" your channels
• In the composite chart you can see which channels you form together with a partner

Gate Lines (1-6)

Each gate has 6 lines that add detail. The line is determined by the exact planetary position at the moment of birth:

1. Line 1 — Investigator: need for a deep foundation of knowledge. Insecurity without a solid base.
2. Line 2 — Hermit: natural talent that others see but the person does not. Need for solitude.
3. Line 3 — Martyr: learning through trial and error. Experiment is the primary tool.
4. Line 4 — Opportunist: network of relationships as a foundation. Influence through close circle.
5. Line 5 — Heretic: projection of expectations from others. Practical solutions for the collective.
6. Line 6 — Role Model: three life phases (before 30, 30-50, after 50). Wisdom through experience.

How to Work with Your Gates

Your activated gates are your consistent themes. Here is how to work with them:

• Review the Gates tab in your bodygraph — it contains a description of each gate
• Pay attention to red (unconscious) gates — this is what others see but you do not
• Study the lines of your gates — they provide deeper understanding
• Compare your gates with a partner in the composite
• Explore the connection with the I Ching for broader context

Remember: a gate is potential. A channel (two connected gates) is a consistent quality. And hanging gates are your zone of learning and attraction of other people.
