Line 6 is the top line of the I Ching hexagram. It possesses a "bird's eye view" perspective and can see the big picture that is inaccessible to other lines.
Three Life Phases of Line 6
Phase 1: Birth to ~28-30 years
In the first phase, Line 6 lives as Line 3 — through trial and error. This is a period of intense, often painful experience. Broken relationships, failed projects, disillusionment with people and ideas. For Line 6, this period is especially difficult because they subconsciously sense their potential to become an example, yet still live in chaos.
Phase 2: ~30 to ~50 years — "On the Roof"
After the first Saturn return (~29.5 years), Line 6 "climbs onto the roof." This is a metaphor for detachment: the person steps back from active experimentation and begins to observe life from above. In this phase, Line 6 evaluates past experience, looks for patterns, and builds a more stable life.
On the roof, Line 6 may seem detached or even indifferent. In reality, they are accumulating perspective that will become invaluable in the third phase.
Phase 3: After ~50 years — The Role Model
After the Chiron return (~50 years), Line 6 "comes down from the roof" and becomes a true role model. All previous experience — the chaos of phase one and the wisdom of observing in phase two — crystallizes into an authentic living example. People naturally gravitate toward Line 6 as someone who has "been through it all" and can now inspire through their being.
The Not-Self of Line 6
The Not-Self of Line 6 is chronic optimism that turns into disappointment. Line 6 always seeks the ideal: the perfect partner, the perfect job, the perfect place to live. When reality doesn't meet expectations, deep pessimism can set in.
The solution is not to abandon high standards but to follow strategy and authority when making decisions. Then ideals become achievable landmarks rather than a source of suffering.
