What is conditioning in Human Design?
In Human Design, conditioning is the not-self theme or programming you absorb from others, environment, and culture that pulls you away from your inner authority and authentic type strategy.
Conditioning in Human Design refers to the influences, beliefs, and patterns you take in from family, culture, relationships, and the wider world, especially during your early life and in the open centers of your BodyGraph. When you absorb these external inputs, you begin to make decisions from them rather than from your own strategy and authority, which is what the system calls living as the not-self.
The mechanism is simple in principle. The centers shown as undefined or open in your chart are the places where you amplify and take in the energy of others, and repeated exposure can hardwire you into specific behaviors, fixed or unhealthy dietary patterns, emotional reactivity, or mental overthinking. Over time this programming can feel like who you are, even when it contradicts the strategy and authority your design suggests you follow.
The practical purpose of noticing conditioning is to gain a way to step back and observe these patterns with awareness rather than acting on them automatically. By watching the mind, tracking the body, and gently returning to your strategy and authority over time, you begin to peel away what was never yours, and what remains is the stable, consistent expression of your type. Conditioning is not viewed as a flaw to eliminate, but as information about where you are still being shaped by outside forces rather than by your own inner truth.
