Authority in Human Design: How to Make Correct Decisions

What Is Authority in Human Design?

Authority is your inner decision-making mechanism. While your type shows how to interact with the world, authority shows how to make correct decisions. It is not logic or the mind — it is body intelligence that operates deeper than thought.

Understanding your authority is one of the most important steps in the Human Design system. Calculate your bodygraph to discover your authority.

7 Types of Authority

1. Emotional Authority (Solar Plexus)

The most common authority — roughly 50% of people. If your Solar Plexus is defined, you have emotional authority.

How it works: Your emotions move in waves — from highs to lows. A correct decision is never made at an emotional peak or trough. You need time to ride the full wave.

Practical advice: Never make important decisions in the moment. Sleep on it for a few days. If clarity remains after the wave passes — act.

2. Sacral Authority

Available only to Generators and Manifesting Generators with an undefined Solar Plexus.

How it works: The Sacral center responds with sounds — "uh-huh" (yes) or "uh-uh" (no). It is an instant, bodily reaction to a specific question or stimulus.

Practical advice: Ask trusted people to pose yes/no questions. Listen to your body, not your head. The answer comes instantly — before the mind can interfere.

3. Splenic Authority

A rare authority connected to intuition and the survival instinct.

How it works: The Spleen speaks once, quietly and in the moment. It is an instant intuitive knowing — "safe" or "unsafe," "healthy" or "unhealthy."

Practical advice: Train your attention to catch the first quiet impulse. If you miss the moment, the Spleen will not repeat. The mind may doubt, but the body's first reaction is always correct.

4. Ego Authority (Ego/Heart)

A very rare authority, found only in certain Projectors and Manifestors.

How it works: Decisions are made through willpower and the feeling of "I want" or "I don't want." The Heart/Ego knows what is worth fighting for and what is not.

Practical advice: Ask yourself: "Do I truly want this? Am I willing to invest my will?" If there is no genuine desire — it is not for you.

5. Self-Projected Authority

Found only in Projectors with a defined G-Center connected to the Throat.

How it works: Truth reveals itself through conversation. When you speak about a decision out loud, you hear your direction in your own voice.

Practical advice: Find a trusted listener. Talk about the decision out loud — do not ask for advice, just speak. Your voice will show you the way.

6. Outer (Mental) Authority

Even rarer. These Projectors have no defined centers below the Throat.

How it works: There is no inner authority in the traditional sense. Decisions come through discussion with different people and reading the environment.

Practical advice: Discuss the decision with several trusted people. Listen not to their advice, but to your own feeling during the conversation. The right environment is the key to clarity.

7. Lunar Authority

Exclusive to Reflectors — people with all centers undefined.

How it works: You need to live through a full lunar cycle (approximately 28 days) to make an important decision. During this time the Moon transits all 64 gates, providing the complete picture.

Practical advice: Keep a journal throughout the lunar cycle. Record your feelings about the decision each day. After the full cycle, the picture will become clear.

Why the Mind Is Not Authority

In Human Design the mind is a wonderful tool for analysis and processing information, but not for making decisions. The mind is easily influenced by conditioning, fears, and others' expectations. Your authority is a far more reliable compass.

"The mind is a wonderful servant but a terrible master. Trust your authority." — Ra Uru Hu
