Borrowed Behaviour Checklist: 7 Questions to Find Your True Self

Somewhere along the way, most of us started living from a script that wasn't ours. We borrowed the strategies of our parents, our teachers, our first boss, the friend we admired at sixteen. We wore their ways of moving through the world and, in time, mistook them for our own. Human Design calls this borrowed behaviour, and it is one of the quietest — and most persistent — obstacles to living as your true self.

Borrowed behaviour is not a failure. It is the natural result of being born into a world of conditioning. As a child, your open centers acted like open doors, and whatever was happening in the people around you walked right in. You learned quickly that certain ways of being earned approval, kept you safe, or made you feel like you belonged. The trouble is that those borrowed ways were never built for your wiring. They are strategies that belong to someone else's Type, Authority, or life path — and they create friction every time you use them.

The signs are usually subtle. A Generator who initiates instead of responds. A Projector who pushes to be seen instead of waiting for the invitation. A Manifestor who asks permission instead of informing. A Reflector who makes snap decisions instead of cycling through the lunar rhythm. On the surface, these choices can look "correct." Inside, they feel like resistance, exhaustion, or a quiet, persistent wrongness.

The path back to yourself begins with noticing. Here are seven questions to walk through honestly.

1. Are you living a Strategy that isn't yours?

This is the clearest marker of borrowed behaviour. Look at what you do when you want something. Do you initiate and push forward (a Manifestor or Manifesting Generator energy)? Do you wait to be asked (Projector)? Do you respond from gut instinct (Generator/MG)? Do you sample and wait a full moon (Reflector)? If your actions do not match your Type's Strategy, you are almost certainly borrowing — and forcing — your way through life.

2. Are you exhausted, bitter, or frustrated as a result?

Human Design names specific "Not-Self" themes for each open center. The most universal sign of borrowed behaviour is that you feel the opposite of what your design supports. Frustration shows up in the open Sacral when a Generator pushes through resistance. Bitterness appears in the open Heart when a Projector is waiting to be recognised instead of being invited. Disappointment in the open G Center is a sign you are following someone else's sense of direction instead of your own. If you are feeling any of these consistently, borrowed behaviour is in the driver's seat.

3. Can you trace it back to a specific person?

Borrowed behaviour is rarely original. It was absorbed from somewhere. A parent's survival tactics, a sibling's personality, a friend's social ease, a mentor's ambition — open centers attract and amplify what is near. Ask yourself: Whose voice do I hear in my head when I behave this way? If you can name them, you have likely found one of the original sources of your conditioning.

4. Are you trying to be seen for something that isn't natural to you?

This is the open Heart in overdrive. Many people chase recognition, money, or status because they learned that worth is something to be proven. But the open Heart is not designed to hold a fixed sense of value — it is designed to sample and flow. If you are constantly trying to prove yourself in ways that feel heavy or never satisfying, you have probably borrowed the energy of someone with a defined Heart. Their certainty about their worth is not yours. It never was.

5. Does it contradict your Authority?

Every body has an inner decision-making Authority — emotional, sacral, splenic, ego, self-projected, or one of the Reflector variants. Borrowed behaviour almost always involves bypassing Authority. You override a gut "no" because you were taught to be polite. You make a logical list when your Authority is splenic and instant. You push through emotional waves to "get it done" instead of waiting for clarity. If your decisions regularly contradict how your body is built to know, conditioning is at the wheel.

6. Are you wearing a mask without realising it?

Borrowed behaviour often feels like a low hum of inauthenticity. You may not be able to name what is wrong — only that something is. You may perform well in life and still feel like an actor on a stage. The mask is the persona you assembled from the strategies and approvals of others. The fact that you cannot always see it is part of the design of conditioning: it becomes invisible through repetition.

7. Have you ever questioned whether this behaviour is really yours?

The simplest test. If you have never once stopped to ask whether a particular habit, belief, or way of being is actually yours, the answer is probably no. True self-behaviour does not need defending. It simply is. Borrowed behaviour requires constant reinforcement — through effort, through proof, through other people's agreement.

Returning to your design

The good news is that borrowed behaviour can be unlearned. The process is not about force or rejection; it is about gently putting down what was never yours to carry. Live your Strategy. Honour your Authority. Notice what your open centers are amplifying and choose, breath by breath, not to act on it.

Human Design speaks of seven-year cycles of deconditioning. There is no rush. The work is the noticing, repeated. Each time you catch yourself borrowing, you reclaim a small piece of the real you underneath.

Your true self was never lost. It was simply waiting beneath all the voices you took on. The checklist above is a mirror. What you recognise in it is the first step toward coming home.
