Emotional vs. Sacral Authority: Which Guides Your Decisions Best?
Human Design teaches that correct decisions do not come from the mind. They come from a deeper, more reliable intelligence within your body. This inner mechanism is called your Inner Authority, and it is the most personal, specific part of your design.
Your Inner Authority is determined by which centers are defined in your BodyGraph. It is your built-in decision-making tool. The mind thinks, strategizes, and worries. Your Authority knows.
The two most common authorities are Emotional and Sacral. Together, they guide the majority of people. But there are seven total, and learning yours changes everything.
The Emotional Wave
If your Solar Plexus Center is defined, you have Emotional Authority. You experience life as a wave: rising into highs, dropping into lows, and eventually settling into clarity. The clarity arrives only after the wave has fully moved through you.

Calculate your chartThis means decisions made in the heat of an emotional moment are almost always wrong. The high feels like truth but is just the crest. The low feels like despair but is just the trough. Truth lives in the calm that comes after.
Practical application: For big decisions, wait. Sometimes hours. Sometimes days. For the largest life choices—relationships, moves, career shifts—wait a full lunar cycle if possible. The question is not "how do I feel right now" but "do I have clarity about this?" When you can describe the situation without an emotional charge, you have your answer.
Emotional Authority people often appear to be struggling because they are sensitive. They are not struggling. They are designed to feel deeply, and that depth is their wisdom. Your emotions are not problems to manage; they are signals to honor.
The Sacral Response
If your Sacral Center is defined but your Solar Plexus is open, you have Sacral Authority. Your decision-making tool is a sound: the guttural "uh-huh" or "un-uh" that rises from your belly.
The Sacral is the body's life force. It knows what is correct for you in the present moment, instantly. It does not analyze. It does not worry about tomorrow. It responds to what is in front of you right now.
Practical application: The biggest mistake Sacral beings make is giving the mind time to override the body. You feel a clear yes in your gut, and then the mind starts generating reasons. Stop and listen before the mind wakes up. Place your hand on your lower belly. Speak your options aloud and listen for the sound. If the answer is unclear, you are not asking the right question.
Sacral Authority is also a strategy: you are designed to respond to life, not initiate. The right opportunities, people, and moments will come to you, and your gut will tell you whether to engage. When you initiate, you skip this system. When you respond, you are in flow.
Comparing the Two
Emotional Authority is slower. It is a weather system that must be allowed to pass. It asks for patience, reflection, and time. It is incompatible with rushed decisions and thrives when honored.
Sacral Authority is instant. It is a muscle that must be exercised. It asks for presence, attention, and trust. It is incompatible with overthinking and thrives when acted upon quickly.
Both are profoundly embodied. Both are far more reliable than the thinking mind. Both require you to stop deferring to logic, advice, or social pressure. The difference is one operates through emotional waves, the other through gut sounds.
The Other Five Authorities
While Emotional and Sacral are most common, five other authorities complete the system.
Splenic Authority speaks in a whisper. It is intuitive, instinctive, and fleeting. If you have it, you must act in the moment; the signal disappears if delayed. It often arrives as a quiet knowing, a sudden aversion, or a "something is off" sensation.
Ego/Heart Authority is for those with a defined Heart Center and a specific configuration. Decisions are made by checking in with what you genuinely want and what you have the willpower to pursue. Ego authority requires that you are emotionally settled before deciding.
Self-Projected Authority belongs to those with a defined G Center but no defined motor below the throat. You are designed to talk things out. Sharing, discussing, even hearing yourself speak aloud brings clarity. The lunar cycle also supports this process.
Mental Authority applies to certain Projectors. You need to discuss decisions with people you trust. Your mind is not your authority; it is a processing tool. The right conversation brings the right answer.
Lunar Authority is the rarest, belonging to those with no defined centers in the relevant positions. You are asked to wait 28 days for major decisions, riding one full lunar cycle to gather all the information you need.
Living the Correctness
Knowing your authority is not a casual exercise. It is a lifelong practice of trusting your body's intelligence over the mind's chatter. Most decisions go wrong because they are made from the open centers, conditioned by other people's strategies, fears, and desires.
When you make decisions from your authority, you move through life with less resistance. Things feel lighter. Doors open. You stop fighting yourself.
The question is not which authority is better. The question is what is yours, and whether you are willing to trust it.
