Line 4 of the Gate of Possession in Great Measure is the position where personal power meets the world of others. It is the harmonic where the riches, skills, and resources of the gate are no longer held in solitude but offered, invested, and amplified through networks of friendship, partnership, and community. The 4th line is sometimes called the opportunist or the externalizer — yet in Gate 14 it is more accurately the friend of great measure, the one whose skill-set is too vast to remain private.
The Hexagram Context
Hexagram 14, Dà Yǒu — Possession in Great Measure — describes a person who holds the keys to manifestation. It is a gate of the Sacral Center, forming the Channel of the Beat (14–2) with the G Center. Its energy is the life-force itself expressing as competence, vitality, and the capacity to bring something valuable into being. The hexagram speaks not of hoarding but of right use — power wielded with grace, generosity, and an almost ceremonial awareness of what is being held.
The Fourth Line Theme
The 4th line is the social position of the hexagram, located in the Quarter of Duality. It is the line of externalization and influence: where the foundation (1), nature (2), and experimentation (3) of the gate are pressed outward into form. The 4th line knows the terrain of human relationships intimately. It reads the field, finds the right ally, and builds through the strength of its associations.
