Gate 2 Line 1: The Foundation of Inner Direction
Hexagram 2, K'un — The Receptive — is the field in which direction germinates. In the I Ching, its first line reads: "The standard is fluctuating. Perseverance brings good fortune." In Human Design, this becomes the foundational, investigative tone of Line 1 applied to the central mystery of Gate 2: how a human being is directed by the Higher Self rather than by the lower mind.
The Theme Within the Gate
Gate 2 is not the gate that chooses a direction; it is the gate that knows the direction. Yet this knowing is non-intellectual, magnetic, often wordless. Line 1 — the lowest and most introspective of the hexagram's six lines — turns the question of foundation toward this knowing: How is the direction of the self grounded? What must be investigated before the self can trust its own bearing?
The 6th-level harmonic that defines all Line 1s is the harmonic of foundational investigation and mutation. Applied to Gate 2, it asks the bearer to turn the search inward. The direction of the Higher Self is real, but it cannot be confirmed in the moment of its emergence. It must be held, tested against inner experience, and matured into a living foundation before it can be trusted as one's own.
