Gate 27 Line 2: The Hermit Who Knows What to Feed Himself
Keynote
The "Recluse of Nourishment." Where Gate 27 as a whole is the intelligence of care — what to feed, how to feed, and the timing of feeding — Line 2 grounds this intelligence in the body itself. It is the self-nourisher, the one who has withdrawn enough from the noise of appetite to know, with quiet certainty, what sustains and what depletes. Its keynote is withdrawn wisdom in service of the body and the blood.
The Line Within the Gate
Hexagram 27, Yi — The Corners of the Mouth — concerns the mouth as the threshold between the world and the self. Line 1 cares through accumulation and survival instinct. Line 2 — the second of the six lines, born at the 6th harmonic level — turns that care inward. The Gate's full theme of feeding the tribe, the family, the project, and the self is here expressed as a private, almost secret relationship with nourishment. The gift is not broadcast; it is kenned.
The Hermit, the Natural, the Projector
Line 2 is the line of the Natural / Hermit / Projector, the genius who waits to be called. In 27.2 this takes a specific form: the wisdom to wait to be asked, and the deeper wisdom to know that the first mouth to feed is one's own. The 27.2 is constitutionally reluctant to impose care. They do not push broth on the unwilling. They are the ones who have learned, sometimes through deprivation, that care offered without invitation becomes cruelty — the very shadow frequency of the whole gate.
The Gift — Conscious and Healthy
At its highest, 27.2 embodies a Jovial self-stewardship. This person knows their rhythms: when to eat, when to fast, when to sleep, when to withdraw. They model a kind of embodied sufficiency that quietly teaches others by example rather than by sermon. Their care is potent precisely because they are not giving from depletion. Friends, partners, and clients experience them as someone who is strangely well-fed in a world of the hungry — and that magnetism draws the right people to be nourished in turn. This is the projector mastery of 27: wait, be called, then nourish from overflow.
The Shadow — Unconscious and Not-Self
Unconscious, 27.2 collapses into the Saturnine shadow of the line: a hard, brittle self-sufficiency that mistakes isolation for wisdom. The hermit becomes the miser of care — rationing attention, withholding food (literal or emotional), and eventually starving the very body and bonds they believe they are protecting. Under stress, this line suspects the nourishment offered by others; under Saturn's contraction, it hoards resources and refuses to be fed. The cruel mouth of the gate, in this line, is the mouth that turns away from its own table.
Planetary Tones
Classically assigned to Line 2:
- ♃ Jupiter exalted — the expansive, generous, faithful care that trusts abundance. The "more than enough" of self-nourishment.
- ♄ Saturn in detriment — the contraction that hardens into withholding, the lonely austerity that confuses deprivation with discipline.
Jupiter pulls the 27.2 outward into right-sharing; Saturn pulls it inward into false economy. The mature expression is to let Jupiter rule — to receive as freely as one gives.
How It Shows Up in the Field
As a Profile line, 27.2 appears in profiles such as the 2/4 (Hermit/Opportunist) and 2/5 (Hermit/Heretic), gifting the design a contemplative, waiting, deeply natural relationship with care. In incarnation crossings, planetary activations of this line bring themes of self-denial, dietary sensitivity, hermitages, fasting traditions, and the long, slow reclamation of the right to be fed. It is the line that, when embodied, finally sets a place at the table for the self.
