Gate 31, Line 6: The Elder of Influence — Role Model of the Voice
The Sixth-Line Keynote
Gate 31 carries the keynote of Leading Through Influence — the transmission of leadership via voice, presence, and personal authority. Line 6 is the uppermost line of the hexagram, and in the I Ching its classical text reads, "The influence shows itself in the jawbones, cheeks, and tongue." This is the line where influence becomes fully embodied — no longer performed, no longer strived for, but radiated from the bone, the expression, the speech. Within the Gate of the Influential Leader, Line 6 is the Elder Influencer or the Sage of Influence: the leader whose authority no longer needs to be claimed because it is recognised.
The line carries the general sixth-line signatures: the Role Model, the Transition, the Three Life Phases, and the Optimist. The optimism here is not naïveté — it is the deep, weathered confidence of one who has passed through the gate's full arc and emerged still willing to speak, still willing to influence.
The Gift: Authoritative Transmission
In its healthy, conscious expression, Line 6 of Gate 31 is a transmitter of wisdom that others seek out unbidden. The voice has authority not because of position or technique but because of integration — the elder has lived through the discipline of leading, has tested their influence, and now carries a knowing that can be metabolised by those around them. They influence by example, by stillness, and by the rare word. They do not need to convince.
