Gate 40 Line 2: The Called Hermit
The second line of the Gate of Aloneness is the projector, hermit, and democrat resonance of the hexagram — the line that, in the Individual Circuit's most solitary gate, must learn to wait for the recognition of its own aloneness rather than impose or retreat. Where Line 1 initiates the energy of working alone through pure drive, Line 2 receives it. It is the line of the natural whose gift is realized only when the world calls it forth.
The Line's Keynote
Line 2 is classically titled The Hermit or The Natural, the receptive line of the twelve — its root identity is to be called into the role it was born to play. In the wisdom of the 12 lines, Line 2 carries the dual character of the projector: it is oriented toward the other, not toward the self, and its work is fulfilled through invitation. The 6th-level harmonic of the hexagram, which is the underlying relational tone, opens this line into a democrat field. It cannot be alone truly alone — even the hermit exists inside a tribe, however small.
Theme Within the Gate
Gate 40, Hsieh / Deliverance, is the gate of freedom won through work, the lone wolf, the one who can carry what others cannot. The hexagram speaks of release from entanglements and the necessity of operating free from obligation. In its second line, this aloneness is not chosen through force of will; it is awarded by life. The 40.2 person is recognized for the singular quality of their solitary contribution. They are called out of the collective to deliver something only they can carry — and the calling is itself the gift.
