Gate 42 Line 3: The Increase That Is Tested
Keynote
Maturation Through Friction
Theme Within the Gate
Gate 42, Yi (Increase), carries the hexagram's promise: what is begun in potential can be amplified into tangible form. The 42nd hexagram is the great "yes" of the I Ching—the wind moving over the earth, the smaller yielding so the greater may grow. Its six lines describe the full arc of that process, from the first stirring of seed to the harvest that completes a cycle.
Line 3 is the 6th-level harmonic of the hexagram—the line where the lower trigram turns into the upper. It is the door of maturation, and in Gate 42 it is where the energy of increase meets the friction required to make increase real. The classical text speaks of being "increased through misfortune" and warns the aspirant not to push forward when tested. Growth is not cancelled by adversity here; it is concentrated by it. The seed must crack before it can sprout, and what looks like a setback is the very mechanism by which capacity is enlarged.
This is the hexagram's trial-and-error hinge. The lower trigram has done its work, the upper trigram has not yet received it, and Line 3 stands in the gap, learning by impact.
The Gift: Conscious/Healthy Expression
In its gift, Line 3 of Gate 42 bestows the mature, hard-won capacity to grow from difficulty rather than despite it. The conscious holder meets obstacles as a kind of tuition—the tuition life charges for the next level of expansion. Where others break or blame, the 42.3 holder asks, "What is this here to increase in me?" and uses the friction to harden skill, deepen wisdom, and refine the vehicle of manifestation.
There is a patient realism here, paired with quiet faith. The growth of Line 3 is not naive; it has been through the mill. Its optimism is earned. People with this line activated in their Profile or Design often become the trusted advisors in situations of stalled development—precisely because they have personally learned that increase arrives on the other side of refusal, failure, or delay.
The Shadow: Not-Self Expression
Unconsciously expressed, Line 3 of Gate 42 becomes chronic martyrdom around growth. The trial-and-error loop hardens into a stuck groove. The person begins to identify with the being tested rather than the maturing. Every setback is taken personally, every delay as punishment, every bump as proof that the increase is not coming.
The shadow shows up as bitterness, defensive rigidity, and a tendency to repeat the same painful pattern in a desperate bid to "finally get it right." The growth meant to be a gift becomes a tax. The holder may prematurely
