Gate 42 Line 4: The Networked Increase
The 4th Line Keynote: Externalization Through Influence
Line 4 is the first line of the upper trigram of Hexagram 42, carrying the 6th-level harmonic of social integration. Its keynote is Externalization/Influence — taking the sacral life-force of increase out into the world through networks of acquaintances, friendships of convenience, and the "right people" encountered at the right moment. Where Line 1 initiates, Line 2 moves with natural genius, and Line 3 experiments, Line 4 publishes: the increase is offered to others, and increase returns through the world of contact.
The classical Wilhelm text for this line reads: "If you walk in the middle, you commit yourself to the prince. This will be good. Perseverance brings good fortune." The "prince" is the noble patron, the influential figure, the higher-order connection. To gain true increase one must align with those who already embody the increment — not servilely, but from a place of centered walking. The "middle" indicates integrity maintained while in proximity to power or opportunity.
The Gift: Mutual Benefiting Through Influence
In the conscious, healthy expression, Gate 42 Line 4 is the principled networker of growth. The sacral knows what is fertile, and the Line 4 influence translates that fertility into social and material expansion by attracting and being attracted to the right allies. There is a discernment here — the Line 4 healthy expression does not collect contacts randomly, but recognizes the princely ones, the carriers of greater cycles, and commits to them through dependable, middle-walking conduct.
The gift is the ability to externalize increase without diluting it. Where others hoard growth or scatter it foolishly, this line can build durable relationships of mutual benefit — patronage that is reciprocal, friendship that is functional and honest. Perseverance in this alignment yields the great good fortune of the hexagram's middle lines: the tortoise-shell oracle affirming that the increase is karmically correct.
The Shadow: Calculation, Favor-Seeking, and the Loss of Center
In the not-self state, the same influence can become opportunism divorced from the middle path. The Line 4 becomes the courtier rather than the steward — currying favor, calculating which "prince" to attach to, and treating the network as a means of personal aggrandizement. Increase sought only for the self turns brittle; the tortoise-shell of providential support cracks.
The shadow also includes scattered externalization: offering one's growth to too many, or to the wrong ones, so that the sacral response — the body's yes/no — is overridden by social ambition. The line of influence becomes the line of being influenced. Good fortune turns to misfortune because the walker leaves the middle to chase the prince, rather than letting the prince come to the centered walker.
Planetary Tone
The 42nd hexagram carries a strong Jupiterian (♃) resonance — increase, expansion, the great beneficiary. The 4th line's intimacy with authority, hierarchy, and the prince adds a Saturnian (♄) undertone: structure, commitment, the weight of patronage and obligation. Read together: Jupiter is exalted here when the increase is shared through committed, well-formed relationships; Saturn falls into detriment when the line collapses into rigid favor-currying or cold calculation. The balanced tone is Jupiterian generosity disciplined by Saturnian integrity.
