Gate 42, Line 5: The Heretic of Increase
The Theme: Projecting the Cycle of Completion
Hexagram 42 — Yi / Increase — speaks of the right moment to withdraw from the old so that the new can flourish. Its wisdom is agricultural and alchemical: what is genuinely true multiplies, and what is finished must be released. In the six-line structure of the hexagram, the lower trigram holds the root experience of cycles, the practical intelligence of knowing when something is ripe. Line 5 sits at the lip between the inner and outer trigrams, the point where private, embodied experience of the cycle is translated into something that can be cast outward as a teaching, a law, a heresy, or a universal formula. Gate 42, Line 5 is the line that universalizes the principle of growth. It is no longer simply in the cycle; it speaks about the cycle to everyone else.
The Heretic and the Solar Plexus Position
Line 5 carries the fixed keynote of the Heretic — the leader whose authority is not borrowed from tradition but produced by a personal, often uncomfortable vision. In the context of Gate 42, this heretic is the one who has watched enough completions and expansions to perceive a law behind them, and who then projects that law onto the general field. They are persuasive, charismatic in their certainty, and frequently inconvenient to the institutions that manage the old order. Where Line 4 has solidified the cycle into a workable form, Line 5 lifts that form and broadcasts it as a universal claim: this is how growth actually works.
The Gift: Universalized Wisdom of Completion
When operating from the conscious, healthy octave, the 42.5 is a true teacher of right timing. They can see the entire arc of a cycle — its beginning, peak, saturation, and necessary decay — and they can name it for others. Their gift is the capacity to withdraw at the correct moment, to instruct others in withdrawing, and to make the case that completion itself is sacred. Read through the Channel of Discovery (42–53), this is the one who turns the beginner's experimental energy into a doctrine of expansion, blessing those who dare to start because they understand the larger rhythm. Generationally, they produce new fields: disciples, students, followers, paradigms, financial systems, and entire worldviews that outlive them.
The Shadow: The Detached Prophet
In its not-self expression, the Line 5 heretic becomes detached from the actual cycles they claim to know. They have a theory of growth but no relationship with the soil. They preach increase while personally living in contraction; they sell expansion but cannot complete a single project themselves. Because the projection is so strong, the shadow is rarely acknowledged — the heretic is too busy universalizing to notice that the teaching has not been lived. Proselytizing, dogmatism, seducing others into speculative ventures, and a quiet contempt for the slow, embodied pace of genuine completion are the markers of the unintegrated 42.5.
Planetary Tones
The classical assignment is Jupiter (♃) exalted and Saturn (♄) in detriment. Jupiter is the natural ruler of expansion, doctrine, and the universal — perfectly mirroring the Line 5 heretic's gift of broadcasting a law of increase. When Jupiter is well-placed, the projection is generous, philosophically sound, and beneficial to whole groups. Saturn, the principle of limitation, contraction, and rigid form, becomes the detriment when the heretic hardens a living process into a fixed doctrine. The gift becomes a closed system; the wisdom of increase becomes a prohibition against genuine change.
How It Manifests
In a profile, 42.5 is one half of a Heretic/Opportunist or Heretic/Role Model configuration, depending on the sixth line. The personality is identified with the projection itself — the role of one who knows the cycles is woven into the persona. As a planetary activation in the Design or Personality chart, it points to a fixed field of experience around teaching, financial speculation, generational leadership, or the transmission of cyclical law. Wherever it lands — a Sun in 42.5 marks a lifetime theme, a Mars an initiating or confrontational expression — the principle is the same: the cycle is complete only when its truth is given to the whole.
