Gate 46 — Love of the Body / Pushing Upward — opens through its first line as a slow, inward pull toward the body itself. The G Center asks, "Who am I?"; this line replies by turning the question downward into flesh, bone, breath, and pulse. The crab of the hexagram (Lake above, Mountain below) does not rush forward — it settles, and studies the ground it must traverse.
The First Line in the Field of the Body
Where the upper lines of Gate 46 push the soul into matter or out of it, the first line simply looks. This is the Investigator line in its most tender habitat: the investigation of embodiment itself. The body is not yet loved or rejected here; it is examined. There is an almost scholarly curiosity about what it means to be a creature, to carry weight, to be moved by desire, to age, to hunger. The foundation of bodily wisdom is laid in this quiet interior research, long before the line can love the body or rise from it.

Calculate your chartThe Sixth Harmonic — Sung / Conflict
The 6th hexagram, Conflict, casts its shadow across this line. The first-line investigator of the body carries a subterranean tension: a quiet dispute between mind and flesh, between what the body is and what the mind believes it should be. The 6th harmonic guarantees that this foundational inquiry is not passive. Something is at stake. The body is being interrogated because it has become, however slightly, a problem to be solved.
The Gift — Jupiterian Embodiment
When healthy, this is Jupiterian (♃) grace at the most material level. The gift is a deep, almost mystical self-awareness of one's own physical nature. The 46.1 investigator learns to love the body not through sentiment, but through thorough understanding. They are the somatic scholar — the one who knows their constitution, their rhythms, their appetites, their limits, and is not at war with any of it. Because the foundation is solid, the body becomes a trusted vehicle. Their presence feels grounded, accepting, warm. The investigation has resolved into self-knowledge, and self-knowledge has resolved into love.
The Shadow — Saturnian Contraction
Unhealthy, the same introspective depth becomes Saturnian (♄)
