Line 1 of Gate 47 carries the title "The Self-Investigation of Realization" or, in some traditions, "Investigation." It is the keynote of the hexagram expressed at its most fundamental, inward-facing level: the root of realization. Where Gate 47 as a whole concerns the mind's journey from mental pressure ("oppression") to awakened understanding ("realization"), Line 1 is the moment — and the lifelong orientation — of going inward to find the ground of that realization. The realization is not borrowed, not given, not taken from the outside; it is self-mined.
This is the bass note of the hexagram. The 6th-level harmonic of the lower trigram — the "Earth below" trigram in the I Ching arrangement of Hexagram 47 — is the fundamental tone, the resonance that everything else is built upon. Without a foundation in self-investigation, the realization of Gate 47 collapses into opinion, dogma, or ungrounded mental agitation.
