Gate 48 Line 1: The Investigating Depths of the Well
The Line's Keynote
Line 1 in the hexagram is the foundation of the well. While Gate 48 as a whole describes the depth of resources that can be drawn up from the inner aquifer — wisdom, well-being, talent, and the fear that the well may run dry — Line 1 is the investigative basis from which that depth can ever be reliably accessed. This is the line of introspective inquiry turned inward toward the well itself: What is the actual nature of this depth? Is it trustworthy? Am I adequate to it? They may also over-identify with the well itself — becoming the depth, the heaviness, the seriousness — and project onto others the role of lightening or rescuing them. The fear of inadequacy metastasizes into a fixed identity of inadequacy, and the foundation, instead of being solid, becomes a basement. They may also be so subject to the 6th harmonic's external crises that they read every life event as confirmation of their deficiency.

Classically, Line 1 carries Jupiter in exaltation and Saturn in detriment. Jupiter here expands the investigative field — faith in the inquiry, optimism that truth will be found — while Saturn, when operating in the shadow, contracts and punishes the search. The mature Line 1 integrates both: Jupiter's trust that the well is worth investigating, and Saturn's discipline to actually do the work.
