It speaks to the necessity of periodically rejecting the old order of values to make way for a renewed and more relevant principle. Revolution in this gate is not violent rupture but a discriminating re-evaluation — the burning away of what no longer serves emotional and tribal truth. It is the gate of the principled person who must, by nature, test the validity of what is held sacred.

The 6th Harmonic: The Line of Externalization

Line 4 — the 6th-level harmonic of the hexagram — marks the shift from the inner, personal foundation of lines 1 through 3 to the social, public arena. It is classically known as the Opportunist or the Net-Worker, and it concerns influence through connection. While lines 1–3 establish the inner relationship to principle (self, projection, and adaptability), line 4 steps outward. It is the line that meets the world, recognises opportunity, and uses relationships as a vehicle for manifesting the inner principle.

Within the I Ching, line 4 of Hexagram 49 speaks of trusting the moment — finding the right people at the right time to bring about the necessary transformation. The revolutionary fires of the lower trigram are not kept private; they are offered as a gift to the collective, but only when the network is ready to receive them.

There is a restless hunger to belong to every worthy revolution simultaneously, and a quiet confusion about which principle is actually being honoured. The shadow becomes the principled dilettante — eloquent, passionate, networked everywhere and rooted nowhere. The correction here is inseparable from the emotional authority of the Solar Plexus. The principle must be felt in the body before it is offered to the world. Strategy and authority ask for a slower tempo: wait for the wave of clarity rather than the impulse to convene, and let the wave pass through its mood before any externalization is permitted. The healthy line 4 trusts that the right people will arrive when the emotional truth is settled, and that scattering only delays the very revolution it claims to serve.
