Line 2 carries the classical name "The Hermit" — the projector line of natural talent and democratic calling. The sixth-level harmonic of the hexagram amplifies the hexagram's own theme, so Line 2 lives inside double conflict: the friction of the gate, recast through the inner, silent arena of the hermit.
The I Ching image for this line — "One does not remain in his own place. One returns home and does not pursue the war" — describes a person who, when friction erupts, instinctively withdraws rather than pushes. Line 2 is the line of the Natural, the Projector-Hermit, and the Democrat. Its genius is that it cannot self-initate successfully; it must be recognized and called.
