Gate 8 Line 6: The Exemplar of Contribution
The Keynote and Position
Gate 8, Contribution (the I Ching's Pi, Holding Together), describes the electromagnetic field of bringing one's authentic voice into a group. The 6th line stands at the apex of the hexagram — the "head," the mountain, the place of perspective. They study how groups hold together, who is forcing, who is authentic, and where the seams are. This is the phase of the still mountain.
- Phase Three (~50 onward): The Elder. A transcendent role emerges. Contribution becomes effortless, unattached, and impersonal. The 6th line becomes the model others point to when they need to understand what it looks like to hold together without grasping.
