What Is a Composite Chart?
A composite chart is a technical overlay of two natal charts. When a full channel—two gates connected across two centers—becomes defined in this combined field, you have a composite channel. These channels are the backbone of the relationship's energy. They determine what kind of understanding, friction, and support is mechanically available between two people.

Before we can read composite channels, we need to understand the three ways Human Design circuitry can link two people. These connection types are determined by looking at how each person's individual channel definitions interact with the other's.
Electromagnetic connections happen when both people have the exact same channel defined in their natal charts. The energy is identical on both sides. This creates a powerful magnetic pull—there is an instant recognition because the circuit is the same. However, like two magnets with the same polarity, it can also create a fixed, sometimes clashing, repetitive dynamic. The relationship is charged, but it can be hard to see the channel from the outside because both partners are equally identified with its energy.
Companionship connections are the most harmonious. This occurs when one person has the first gate of a channel and the other has the second gate. Neither person has the complete channel in their natal chart, but when they come together, the channel is completed. There is a feeling of wholeness and ease. Each person brings exactly what the other is missing. These are the friendships and partnerships that feel supportive and natural.
Dominance connections occur when one person has an entire channel defined and the other has neither gate of that channel active. The person with the defined channel carries the energy fully, and the other person experiences it as an amplification or projection. In a relationship, the person without the channel may feel overwhelmed, overpowered, or deeply drawn into the channel's theme. It is a teacher-student dynamic at its core.

When we look at the composite chart itself, we see which of these connection types have been "locked in" as the relationship's baseline energy. If both people bring the same channel to the relationship, it appears in the composite as fully defined—the electromagnetic circuit becomes the shared ground they stand on. If two people each bring half of a channel, it becomes defined in the composite for the first time—a companionship channel is born. When you see these channels in the composite, ask: was this channel electromagnetic, companionship, or dominance in the original two charts? That tells you the texture of the connection. An electromagnetic channel of recognition tends to run hot and fast, drawing both people in with intensity before they even understand what pulled them together. A companionship channel settles into a quieter, more reliable rhythm, where each partner supplies what the other lacks without scorekeeping. A dominance channel asks the person holding the energy to be conscious of how much they amplify, and asks the receiver to be honest about how much they can truly metabolize.
Reading composite channels is less about predicting whether a relationship will last and more about understanding the wiring you're already inside. Once you see the channels, the friction stops looking like a personality flaw and starts looking like a circuit doing exactly what it was built to do.
