How to Find Your Human Design Type and Strategy
If you've just discovered Human Design, the Type and Strategy is the place to start. It is the foundation of the whole system, the part that gives you a clear, practical way to move through your days with less resistance. Everything else in your chart — your authority, your profile, your channels and gates — builds on this one decision: how your energy is designed to engage with the world.
What Type and Strategy Actually Mean
Human Design is a synthesis of several wisdom traditions, including the I Ching, astrology, the Kabbalah, and the chakra system. When you input your birth data, the chart shows which of the nine centers are "defined" (colored in) and which are "open" (white). That pattern reveals your Type, and your Type reveals your Strategy.
Your Strategy is the mechanical way your aura interacts with life. It is not a moral rule or a personality test. It is more like a key: the right one opens a door smoothly, the wrong one jams the lock. Most of the suffering people experience around decision-making, work, and relationships comes from using a Strategy that doesn't match their actual mechanics.
What You Need: Your Birth Data
To get an accurate chart, you need three things:
- Your exact birth date
- Your exact birth time (as close to the minute as possible)
- Your birth location
The birth time matters because the planets move quickly and small changes can shift your Type, your Authority, and especially your Profile. If you don't know your exact time, check your birth certificate or ask a parent. If you genuinely cannot find it, you can work with a Human Design analyst who specializes in rectification — a process of narrowing down the time through life events.

The Five Types and Their Strategies
There are five Types, and each one has a different job to do in the world.
Generator (about 37% of the population)
Strategy: to Respond
Generators are the life force of the planet. They have a defined Sacral center, which gives them sustainable energy for work they love. Their Strategy is to respond to life — to wait for things to come across their path and notice what lights them up and what doesn't. The Sacral speaks through a gut "uh-huh" or "uhn-uhn" sound, not through the mind.
Manifesting Generator (about 33%)
Strategy: to Respond, then Inform
Manifesting Generators are Generators with a defined channel that connects their Sacral energy directly (or nearly so) to their Throat. This lets them skip steps, move faster, and initiate in a multi-passionate way. They still wait to respond, but once they commit, they inform the people affected by their actions to avoid resistance.
Projector (about 20%)
Strategy: to Wait for the Invitation
Projectors have a focused, absorbing aura designed to see and guide others. They are not here to grind through work like a Generator. Their energy is better suited for studying systems, managing, and offering wisdom. They thrive when invited — into jobs, relationships, homes, friendships. An uninvited Projector often feels bitter or unseen. An invited one feels recognized and well-paid.
Manifestor (about 9%)
Strategy: to Inform
Manifestors are the initiators. They have a closed, repelling aura and a defined motor center connected to the Throat, which allows them to start things out of nowhere. Their Strategy is simple: tell the people who will be impacted by their actions what they're about to do. Informing doesn't ask permission. It neutralizes the resistance their aura naturally creates.
Reflector (about 1%)
Strategy: to Wait a Lunar Cycle (about 28 days)
Reflectors are incredibly rare. They have no defined centers, which means they are completely open to the wisdom of their environment. They sample the world around them. For big decisions, they are designed to wait a full lunar cycle — about 28 days — so they can see how the decision feels across all the different energetic weather. They are lunar beings, and their lives improve dramatically when they are in the right place, with the right people, at the right time.
How to Find Your Type on Your Chart
Once you have your chart, look for the colored-in centers.
- Defined Sacral center (the square in the lower middle of the bodygraph) = you are a Generator. If you also have a defined channel connecting a motor to the Throat, you are a Manifesting Generator.
- No defined Sacral, but a defined channel from a motor center to the Throat = Manifestor.
- No defined Sacral, no defined motor-to-throat connection = Projector.
- No defined centers at all = Reflector.
The center shape is fixed in your chart, so your Type does not change. It is a mechanical constant of how you were born.
Common Beginner Questions
"What if my chart says one thing but I don't relate to it?"
That is almost always conditioning. From the time you were born, the people around you shaped how you behave. The Strategy often feels awkward at first because it is new. It is designed to be tested slowly, not adopted overnight.
"Do I have to follow it perfectly?"
No. It is a mechanical experiment. You are not failing if you forget or if life doesn't let you follow it every time. Notice what happens when you do. That's the experiment.
"Why does my Type feel limiting?"
It isn't. It is a description of how your energy actually works. Most of the limits people feel come from trying to operate as a Type they are not.
A Final Word
Your Type is the entry point. Once you know it, the next layer is your Authority — the inner decision-making tool inside you. Strategy gets you in the door. Authority helps you choose what to do once you're there. Start with the Type. Let the rest unfold as you live with it.
