The experiment is the heart of Human Design. Learn how to start living according to your design.
Human Design founder Ra Uru Hu always said: "Don't believe me. Check it for yourself." Human Design is not a belief system. It is mechanics that must be verified through personal experience.
The experiment is the practice of living according to Strategy and Authority over an extended period (minimum 7 years — a full cell renewal cycle).
Step 1: Know Your Basics
You need to know three things:
- Your type — Generator, Manifesting Generator, Projector, Manifestor, or Reflector
- Your strategy — how to interact with the world
- Your authority — how to make decisions
That's all you need to start.
Step 2: Start Small
- Generators — ask each morning: "What do I have sacral response to today?"
- Projectors — notice when you're invited or recognized
- Manifestors — practice informing others about your plans
- Reflectors — start keeping a lunar journal

- Generator — frustration (when initiating instead of responding)
- Projector — bitterness (when not receiving recognition)
- Manifestor — anger (when controlled or stopped)
- Reflector — disappointment (in the wrong environment)
These emotions are indicators that you're not living according to your design.
Step 4: Be Patient
Deconditioning takes years. First results appear after a few months, deep transformation takes 7 years. Every day of practice is a step toward your authentic nature.

What It Actually Feels Like in the First Weeks
The gap between reading these four steps and living them is wider than it looks. Most people start strong, then notice a strange thing around week two or three: the inner signals feel quieter than expected, and the old patterns feel louder. A Generator who has been initiating for thirty years does not suddenly feel a clean sacral response on a Tuesday morning. What usually shows up first is a low hum of frustration that has no obvious cause, or a sense that the morning question lands awkwardly, like speaking a language you studied but never used. That awkwardness is the signal working, not failing. The body is being asked a new question, and it takes time to remember how to answer.
There is also a common emotional weather shift in the early months. People who begin a Strategy and Authority practice often report feeling more tired, not less, for the first six to eight weeks. The reason is mechanical. When you stop initiating from the mind and start waiting for the body's response, the nervous system is suddenly doing a different job. It is no longer running on the fuel of mental urgency. This feels like depletion until the sacral or solar plexus or splenic system recalibrates to a slower, more accurate rhythm. The tiredness is a sign the experiment is landing, not a sign it is wrong for you.
Where the Misreadings Hide
The four not-self themes are easy to misread because the words are familiar. Frustration, bitterness, anger, and disappointment are emotions everyone has, and it is tempting to attribute every flare of them to the experiment. The more reliable reading is to ask whether the emotion arrived in the context of a specific not-self behaviour. A Generator feeling frustrated because a friend cancelled plans is just disappointment. A Generator feeling frustrated an hour after pushing through a project they initiated without any sacral pull is the indicator. The key is the pairing: the emotion only counts as a design signal when it follows a moment where Strategy and Authority were bypassed.
Another common misreading happens with the lunar cycle for Reflectors. A lunar journal is not a mood diary. The point is not to record how each day felt but to notice the larger wave, the way a full lunar month carries a single theme that only becomes legible in hindsight. Reflectors often abandon the practice after two weeks because daily entries feel flat. The experiment only works if you give the entire cycle room to speak. Treat each entry as a single pixel of a picture that will not resolve for twenty-eight days.
A Practical Way to Begin Without Overwhelm
Pick one decision per day, and only one. Not the biggest one, not the one you have been dreading, just a small, ordinary choice: what to eat for lunch, whether to answer an email now or later, which errand to run first. Run that single decision through your authority and notice what happens over the next seven days. Write down the result, not the feeling. What actually occurred in your outer life when you followed the signal. The outer result is the only evidence that matters in Human Design, and after a week of small, recorded decisions the pattern starts to become visible in a way that theory never could.
