Your First Look at the Bodygraph: Don't Panic
You've just calculated your Human Design chart and see a diagram with colored centers, lines, and numbers. This is your bodygraph, a unique energetic blueprint calculated from your birth date, time, and place. Don't worry: it's easier to understand than it looks.
In this article, we'll walk through the key elements of your chart in the order you should study them. No overwhelm — just the essentials to get started.
Step 1: Your Type
The first and most important thing is your Type. Human Design has five Types: Generator, Manifesting Generator, Projector, Manifestor, and Reflector. Your Type determines how your energy interacts with the world. Generators and Manifesting Generators have consistent life force energy. Projectors guide others' energy. Manifestors initiate. Reflectors mirror their environment.
Type is your foundation. Everything else in the chart builds on it. Compare the Types to understand yours better.
Step 2: Strategy
Each Type has its own Strategy — a specific way to make decisions and move through life. Generators wait for a Sacral response. Projectors wait for invitations. Manifestors inform before acting. Reflectors wait a full lunar cycle. Strategy is a practical tool you can start using today.
Step 3: Inner Authority
Authority is your inner compass for making decisions. It can be Emotional (Solar Plexus), Sacral, Splenic (intuition), Ego Authority, and others. Authority tells you how to make decisions, while Strategy tells you when.
Step 4: Centers — Defined and Open
The bodygraph has nine Centers — they appear as geometric shapes. Colored (defined) Centers are your consistent energy. White (open) Centers are where you receive and amplify energy from others. Defined Centers show who you are. Open Centers show where you learn — and where the Not-Self can arise.
Step 5: Profile
Your Profile consists of two numbers (for example, 3/5 or 1/3) and describes your life role. The first number is the conscious line (what you know about yourself). The second is unconscious (what others see in you). Profile adds depth to your Type understanding.
Step 6: Channels and Gates
Lines between Centers are Channels. Each Channel connects two Gates and creates a specific energy. Gates are numbers from 1 to 64 (corresponding to I Ching hexagrams). You don't need to study all 64 Gates at once — start with the Channels that are defined in your chart.
Step 7: Incarnation Cross
This is your life theme, determined by four key Gates (Sun and Earth in conscious and unconscious positions). The Incarnation Cross is a more advanced element worth revisiting after you've grasped the basics.
What's Next?
Don't try to learn everything in one day. Start with Type, Strategy, and Authority — they are the three pillars of Human Design. Live with this knowledge for a week or two, observe yourself, and only then dive into Centers, Channels, and Gates.
