North and South Nodes: Rahu and Ketu in Human Design

In Human Design, most of what fills your BodyGraph is mechanical. The planets move, the gates activate, the channels light up, and the incarnation cross arranges itself based on the position of the Sun and Earth at your birth. There is one exception, and it is the most important one: the Nodes of the Moon, Rahu and Ketu, are the only pieces of fate in the entire system. Everything else in your design is awareness in motion. The Nodes are the pull.

What the Nodes Actually Are

The North and South Nodes are not planets. They are the two points where the Moon's orbital path crosses the ecliptic — the apparent path of the Sun. In Human Design, they are named after the Vedic lunar nodes: Rahu (North) and Ketu (South). Ra Uru Hu called them the "monopole," meaning they are the only magnetic force in the chart that draws the planetary energies through you in a specific direction rather than letting them simply radiate outward.

In every chart, Rahu and Ketu sit exactly opposite one another, always 180 degrees apart. One of them falls in your Personality side, the other in your Design side. Together they form a single axis that defines the trajectory of your life — where you have been and where you are going.

Ketu: The South Node and Where You Have Been

Ketu is the South Node, and in Human Design it represents your past. Not in a casual sense, but in a literal mechanical one. Ketu is the condition you have already mastered, the theme you have lived so many times that your body knows it intimately. This is the place of comfort, of automaticity, of the gift that does not feel like a gift because it has always been there.

If you have a gate defined in Ketu, you have a deep, embodied familiarity with the theme of that gate. It is not something you need to learn. It is something you need to remember and integrate without getting lost in it. The danger of Ketu is not weakness — it is over-reliance. Because Ketu feels so natural, the personality tends to camp there, replaying the old skill, the old story, the old identity. Ra called this "living in the past."

Rahu: The North Node and Where You Are Headed

Rahu is the future. It is the theme of this life, the direction of your evolution, the place your design is pulling you toward whether you are ready or not. Rahu is magnetic. It draws your attention, your environment, your relationships, and your opportunities toward it, often in ways that feel fated, synchronistic, or uncomfortable.

The gate where Rahu sits is your growth point. The themes of that gate will arrive in your life again and again — through people, through circumstances, through an inner restlessness that will not let you rest in the old patterns of Ketu. Rahu does not promise you will be good at its theme. In fact, you usually will not be, at least not at first. It is the unfamiliar direction, the unfamiliar flavor, the part of the design that requires trust.

The Magnetic Monopole and the Planets

Here is where the broader planetary picture comes in. In Human Design, the Sun and Earth carry the primary imprint of your incarnation. They are always opposite each other, and they form the spine of your incarnation cross. The Moon, however, sits approximately 88 degrees ahead of your Design Sun, which is what creates the roughly 88-day gap between your Personality (conscious) and Design (unconscious) crystals.

The other planets — Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune — each contribute their own flavor to specific gates. They are the colors, the textures, the emphasis. But none of them determine direction. They are all pulled through the magnetic field created by the Rahu-Ketu axis. This is why the Nodes are the only true destiny in the system. They are the field itself. The Sun does not choose where to shine. The Earth does not choose where to ground. They are routed through the Nodes.

The Sun, Earth, and the Lunar Connection

Because Rahu and Ketu are lunar nodes, they tie the entire planetary picture to the Moon's relationship with the Sun. Your Design Sun is the conscious identity you are here to embody in this life. Rahu pulls that Sun's energy through a specific gate, giving the Sun's light a particular flavor of destiny. Your Design Earth, opposite, grounds that energy. Ketu, sitting opposite Rahu, is the past-conditioning filter through which the whole Personality field is interpreted.

This is why two people with the same incarnation cross can have radically different lives. The Rahu-Ketu axis shifts the cross into specific gates, and those gates color everything. The planets still play their roles — Mercury brings communication, Venus brings attraction, Mars brings drive, Jupiter brings expansion, Saturn brings structure — but they are all playing on the stage set by the Nodes.

Working With Your Nodes

The invitation is not to live in Ketu's comfort or to force yourself into Rahu's unfamiliarity. The invitation is to let Rahu pull you. When you find yourself repeatedly drawn to a particular theme, a particular kind of person, a particular kind of challenge, check your Rahu gate. That is the direction. Ketu is what you can fall back on, but it is not where you grow.

Honoring your Nodes means releasing the idea that the past is where your power lives. Your power lives in your willingness to be pulled forward by something you do not yet understand, guided by a body that has been here before and a mind that is meeting this life for the first time.
