Transits to Your Defined and Undefined Centers
Most people who learn about Human Design get their chart, study their Type, Strategy, and Authority, and stop there. The chart becomes a snapshot—true, but static. To bring the system alive, you have to add movement. You have to add transits.
In Human Design, transits are built on the I Ching. The 64 hexagrams are arranged in the mandala, and the planets cycle through them, activating gates one at a time. When a planet activates a gate you have, something happens in your bodygraph. The question is: what kind of something? It depends entirely on whether that gate lives in a defined or undefined center.
The Two Kinds of Activation
Every center in your bodygraph is either defined or undefined. There is no middle ground. Defined centers are wired in—fixed, mechanical, reliable. Undefined centers are open—receptive, amplifying, and shaped by what is around them. Transits touch both, but they touch them very differently.

Calculate your chartThe Sun is the easiest transit to track because it moves about one gate every five and a half days and takes roughly 88 years to complete the full cycle. The Moon moves much faster, activating about eleven gates a day. The other planets fall somewhere in between. Each of these planetary transits carries a different quality and duration, but the underlying principle of defined versus undefined remains constant.
Transits to Your Defined Centers: Volume on What's Already There
When a planet transits a gate in one of your defined centers, you are getting a temporary amplification of energy you already carry. If you have the Throat Center defined, for example, and the Sun activates a gate there, your natural communicative quality rises. You speak more, you attract more attention to your voice, you might feel called to express something you have been sitting on.
This is not foreign energy. It is your own frequency getting a boost. Defined centers operate mechanically—they are not optional, and neither is the way they respond to a transit. The transit simply turns up the dial on what is already running.
The key here is surrender. You do not have to force anything when a transit hits a defined center. The energy is yours, and it will move through you. The work is to notice it, to follow it, and to let it do what it does. Many people try to control defined energy during a transit and find themselves exhausted. The defined part of you already knows how to do this. Step out of the way.
Transits to Your Undefined Centers: Temporary Visitors
Transits to undefined centers are where the real learning happens—and where most people get confused.
When a planet transits a gate in one of your undefined centers, you are experiencing a temporary activation. It is not yours. It is being projected into your openness, amplified through your aura, and felt in your body. Depending on the transit, you might feel suddenly creative when your Ajna is undefined and the Sun is activating a gate there. Or you might feel pressured to commit to something when your Solar Plexus is undefined and a transit lights it up.
The temptation is to identify with the energy. The mind immediately says, "This is who I am right now. I am a person who feels deeply, or I am a person who needs to act." But the bodygraph is telling a different story. The center is undefined. The energy is a visitor.
The wisdom of undefined centers is that they are places of potential. They allow you to sample, to learn, to hold space for the energies of others. But they are not where your consistency lives. Consistency lives in what is defined.
The Conditioning Trap—and the Gift of Witnessing
When a transit hits an undefined center, the energy wants to condition you. This is the central nervous system doing its job. If you take on the energy as yours—if you act from it, identify with it, or let it shape a decision—you are building a pattern that is not true to your design. You are letting a temporary visitor move in.
The alternative is to witness. To feel the energy, to let it pass through, and to recognize that it is a moment, not a permanent state. This is where Human Design becomes a spiritual practice rather than just a chart reading. Every transit to an undefined center is an opportunity to amplify without attaching, to feel without claiming.
The defined centers remain stable. The undefined centers are the playground. Over time, the more you can witness the transits to your open centers, the less conditioned you become, and the more clearly you can hear the consistent voice of your defined ones.
Living with the Movement
Your chart is a snapshot of the moment you were born, but you are not a snapshot. You are a moving body in a moving field. Transits are how the universe keeps knocking on your doors, both the ones that are always open and the ones that open only sometimes.
The invitation is simple. Learn which of your centers are defined. Learn which are not. When a transit lands, ask whether it is amplifying what is already there or temporarily visiting what is not. Then respond accordingly. Either way, the energy is real. The difference is whether it is yours.
That distinction—yours versus borrowed—is the whole game. Once you can feel it, the transits stop being noise and start becoming a language.
